At the start of the GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana weekend, which will see either Marquez or his Yamaha Factory Racing rival Lorenzo crowned as 2013 MotoGP™ champion, it was the former who took the advantage over the latter late in the session, in sunny, dry conditions.

Marquez’ Repsol Honda teammate Pedrosa could have a big shout in the destiny of the title on Sunday and he was just 0.024s behind the pace man on the timesheet.

Also in the top five were rookie Bradley Smith on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 machine and his factory colleague Valentino Rossi – both of them over half a second down on P1.

The top 10 also featured Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini), Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda) and Ducati Team pair Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso.

Marquez quickest in FP1 and FP2, just barely, over Lorenzo. And, so the weekend begins... anything can happen, but it's not looking like a positive start for Lorenzo holding the title when it's done.

Lorenzo's only hope is MM falling off. It doesn't look like MM is cruising around playing safe. Lorenzo couldn't ask for more.

Agreed. I don't think Marquez would be satisfied with taking the championship by being safe and cruising around. He is gonna go for it. That's what makes his being in MotoGP exciting. I'd rather see him crash, battling for the lead, and lose the championship, than him cruising around in 3rd or 4th, playing safe, to take the championship.

You might and I might. Not sure Marquez would! He may be a MotoGP rookie but he is definitely not a GP rookie and is already a World champion in Moto 2. I expect he knows what he has to do to get the title. It's his to lose and if he throws away the bike (and championship) getting drawn into an unnecessary battle with Lorenzo he will look like the biggest idiot in racing and have more then a little explaining to do to Honda, Repsol, et all!

Seems to me that world championships are too hard to come by for that.

Marquez already said he's got his eye on the points, because no one remembers how many races you won compared to how many championships.

His future's bright regardless of how he finishes the year, but if he throws away a rookie year WC, he's going to look really dumb. And his Motegi helmet aside, he doesn't strike me as being really dumb. About average for a pro racer, but not an idjit.

Marquez is under a different kind of pressure. His boss is looking over his shoulder, more concerned about the championship than the win. MM clearly doesn't like it. The DQ at P.I. is still a sore spot. The wounds from the Aragon fiasco are still in play too. We've seen DP lose an engine mount from oversight. Tensions are high in the Repsol garage as there is a big let down lurking about. Will Valencia be another link in Honda's chain of controversy?

Lorenzo is his usual calm and highly focused self, free to race his own race without team related drama.

It ain't over til it's over.

In best case scenario Lorenzo will get up front, followed by Rossi who will block every Honda move for the entire race. Pedrosa will finally overtake Rossi into 2nd. Unfortunately this still leaves MM in 4th and with the title. As much as we all wish this was the race for the championship, most likely it will not be. Moto 3 on the other hand will be a cracker
