Bike towed home...

This morning when I started the bike I hear an unusual click when I pushed the power button and started fine. Rode to work and parked. After work, I put the key in pushed the start button and I hear click click click... Head lights seemed dim. I call the Mrs. she brought my tools and a voltmeter. Battery read 12 volts, when trying to start it voltage dropped to about 9 volts. Waited 1 hrs for the tow truck. I'm towing it to the dealer tomorrow AM..... But, anything I should consider before taking the long drive there?

Easy to test. Start bike and measure votlage at battery. Should be about 13.7 - about 14. If not, charge system problem likely.

A fully charged battery will read 12.6 - 12.7 after settling down from a charge. 12.35 is 75% charged. 12.1 is 50% charged. Or it can be monitored after charging and see how far it is down in the morning. Should not go down much or there might be something loading a circuit.

Other than the drive, warranty. Maybe one cell in battery went.

From my little bit of knowledge gathered from the research I am doing about the same problem with my 2013, if the battery dips below 9.6V while cranking, then you have a bad cell. Apparently, it's a rule of thumb — I don't know but 9V doesn't seem like it would be enough to get that starter going. Get it load tested by your dealer or better yet, surf youtube/net to see that with just a voltmeter, one can determine much about their battery.

Damn batteries.

Update:

Doing some pocking around and trying to start it, the display now shows: EWS error which from what I gather is a bad antenna. Hopefully the dealer has one in stock for a quick replacement.

cranking with the battery too low is a recipe for corrupting ECU data. did you try push-starting it before the battery went so flat?

You cannot push start the 8GS. If the battery is dead, there is not enough juice generated to get the fuel injection going.
There have been a string of bad batteries on the 8gs. Also keep in mind that the charging voltage is too low on earlier bikes, and batteries tends to oversulfate.

So, would the battery be covered under BMW manufacturer's warranty? Or should be prepared to fork out the money in which case, what is the best recommendation for a battery?

Unless you did something silly with accessory wiring, the battery is definately covered. Sounds like there is either a drain on the battery when off or the battery isn't holding it's charge. Be firm if you're innocent. A low battery will cause many errors like EWS but that's normal. Not enough juice to read your key and operate systems.

Replacing a battery under warranty is common practice, nothing funny about it.

Thanks. No funny business with the electrical. What is surprising to me, if the battery is the issue and not the EWS, is that I did not experience any "fair" warning as I have experiences on my cars before the battery goes bad.

Mine went bad inside 12 months.... ( 2009 8GS) covered under warranty. You should be ok. Unless you have a idiot dealer.

My battery had a sudden death syndrome within 6 months of new. A shorted cell will do that. It had the same multi meter readings you got.

Think positive, the other option is a bad stator. You can do a quick check on that too next time. Jump start the bike and see what voltage input you are getting at the terminals. It should be 13.7v or better.

Batteries are covered. Stators likely will not be covered.

Bad on BMW for not having a voltage display or warning. When the alt went on the Jeep, it told me immediately and I went straight home.

Bike left at dealer. They determined it is a bad antenna and need to order it. I asked then to check the battery as well. I will post an update when I get the bike back.
