Question Fitting electric start to xr400r?

Just doing some research into fitting an electric start to an xr400r. Under the impression I can use parts from a honda ex400 quad.

Has anyone attempted this? Any advice?

Not too concerned about weight gain as I mostly ride trails.

Cheers

Jeffrey Honda in Ferntree Gully was the importer of the kit to modify the XR400 from what I was told going back a few years ago.. The biggest issue they had was welding a battery box to the subframe as most of the parts are straight swap over I think..

I`ll have a look for their number if you would like to pick their brains for ideas..

Here we go....

Jeffrey Honda Motorcycles

1029A Burwood Highway

Ferntree Gully Victoria

Tel: (03) 9758 7322

Fax: (03) 9752 2540

Hope this helps..

Click "news" for the Leccy XR400 page.

Obviously no more new bikes but they may sell a kit or do the conversion. $2k on top IIRC.

EDIT

Quick...but not quicker than Nev

the parts iirc come from a 450 4wheeler and you therefore may be able to bodgy your own from wrecker parts. probably need to ask the question over at thumpers or one of the usa sites for parts listings etc.

one of the honda dealers in townsville was doing them for the cape york fleet.

i guess that makes you slow chris - tho i hear nev seems to have gained a bit of speed now he's discovered there's more than 2 gears on the se...

G'day. Have an xr400r 96 model and interested in putting in an electric start. A mate had a Honda EX400 quad and the motor is very similar. I can get the parts pretty cheap off ebay but was wondering is it just a 'bolt on' or is there a bit of mucking around? Another guy said it would involve an adaptor...

Found a place that sells a 'kit' but it is over $2000.00!

Any advice?

Cheers

a search engine or at least use thereof would help you wonders...

consider that my advice but if you are really that stuck try maybe having a look at some of the parts fiches for your xr400 and the trx 450...

Howdy,
My lecy start was put on new by Jeffrey Honda. It now has 10,000K on it and has had no problems. It will start the bike cold or hot unlike some of the el cheapo kits that dont use genuine honda parts. There is no adaptor plate.Complete L/H gear box cover is used with starter atatched. The kit is the same as the quad bike but these days the XR400 Motard could be used as donar.Battery is under L/H side cover and has two tabs welded to frame to secure it.Give the guys at Jeffrey a call im sure they will give you some help. Its worth the cost it makes a great bike awsome.Feel free to come and look at mine if you want.

Mmmm...

Yes, I rang them and they are over $2000.00 for the kit! Cannot justify that amount for a 96 model xr as much as i love the bike! Probably better to save and trade in on a ktm or drz? or dr650.

Thanks for your reply though.
