Fly, rent, ride in north CA for Thanksgiving

I am from Jackson MS and have wanted to spend a week riding northern CA for many years. Problem is that it is 2,000 miles and with only a week off it is just too far to ride. Yes I have been to CA twice but they were both a quickies. I have the week of Thanksgiving off and I am thinking of flying to northern CA and rent a bike. Want to Fly in on 11-24 and fly out on 11-30. San Francisco is for sure on the list but not sure what else .
I need advice.
Who to rent from? What can I expect from the weather? Is this even a good time or not to do this? Places of interest and good riding?
Please advise,

Thanks,
Pappy

Thanksgiving is almost allways nasty mendocino north, not sure of the rest. There is great riding but definately a tough time of year weather wise. SF south would be better, and so cal would be best weatherwise. You cant go wrongrither way when it comes to great riding though.

couple of questions...

How far north is northern CA to you? Sacramento? Redding? Fortuna?
What kind of riding are you looking for (all street, twisties, back roads, dual sport)?
Are you cool with inclement weather?
What parts of CA do you want to see? What have you seen already?

I'll be in the Bay Area over Thanksgiving and could possibly meet up and ride with you on some really fun back roads in the Santa Cruz hills...or just give you suggestions for where to go...

With a week you can do the whole state! If you find yourself in LA and want a free place to crash and securely store your bike let me know, I should be around. Yes it willbe Thanksgiving but we can head to the beach

A week with the multi heading down the ca coast, that would be hard to beat.

WOW you guys are fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You gave a lot of good info. One offered help with a place to crash and another to take me on rides.

I normally spend lots of time planning but this time off just sort of popped up.
Still have not decided what to do but this info helped at lot.
If I decide that CA is the place I think I will fly in to San Fransisco rent the bike and head south and around.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'll be loosing 2 full days coming/going out of SFO, if you're heading south.

This time of year, it is gunna be tough to beat the desert's. Death Valley, Mojave Nat'l Preserve, Joshua Tree NP, and the Anza Borrego State Park area to name just a few.

Comments like mine is just going to confuse you. Ignore what I said. Stay with SFO. Take rain gear. You'll be fine.

Mist coming through redwoods, smelling the salt of the ocean, knobbies on dirt with nobody around,,, give a shout if you head north of Mendocino Co.

The way things are going up here in FarNorCal, weather may not be an issue. We have been bone dry for this time of year so you may get lucky.

I would hammer the shit out of the coast, head up and down Hwy 1 taking advantage of some of the great roads that run from the coast back to HWY 101. You cold not go wrong heading north out of SF and taking HWY 1 all the way up to Eureka. Turn around then head south for different views. If you do this, do make the Lost Coast Loop. The Road is ruff but it's some of the most remote country in the lower 48.

Hwy 36 and Hwy 96 both routinely make top road list for the US....only issue would be if we get weather.

Even if we don't get any real weather to speak of, the Sierras will be cold/icey depending on the time of day due to the altitude. The coastal range is not as high and being closer to the ocean, warmer so mountain passes are not as much of an issue.

I'm still a noobie (i.e. I don't ride very fast, especially in the twists) but I have thursday and friday off that week if rides get organized/kinda just happen in the bay area.

I'm in Oakland, but so far I've spent more time riding between Santa Cruz and Halfmoon bay than on my side.
