the darth peach wandered north

This will be a straight shot of my trip through BC and to Hyder, AK July/Aug '10.
Most of it will be 're-post', but I wanted to pull it out and put it together on it's own.
Will be adding some new pics just found at the end..

Cheers and enjoy.

All I know is that I'm so looking forward to going back.
Now that I actually know the way.

The hider of pain.
The hider of joy.
The hider of bad hair days.

The Helmet.

I spent 16 days in mine.

Join me, if you'd like, while I re-live the ride through pictures and various thoughts.

Day 1

So,
this trip was a result of very little preparation and even less planning.
New tires, chain, sprocket, service. That's about it.
I wasn't even sure I could really go until about 48 hours before departure.

Packing?
Happened the morning of.

GPS?
Iphone.

Maps?
I'll get them on the way. Maybe.

The goal was Victoria, BC to visit some old friends.
Hyder, AK came in to play a few days before I was able to leave.
And as has happened before, was the end result
of a text msg of me asking if there was a good westerly route through BC to AK.

I made the decision, since time was not originally on my side, to super slab it all the way up to Hyder first
and then if time & funds allowed, hit Victoria on my way back.

Only stopping for views, fuel, functions, and sleep, I was on a mission.
Kind of.

1,800 mi.
My door to the southernmost tip of Alaska.
Let's roll.

But first, allow me to skip to the most boring part of the trip......

Tradgedy strikes

Where were we?
Oh yes....

Clouds.
Big fluffy clouds.

And then, in the midst of all this blue sky beauty and not so bad scenery,
A wallm*$% truck decided to stay neck and neck with me, blocking my views of Mt Shasta.

I decide to snap a pic and think of something funny to say about it later, when the camera, my beloved little Canon, gently rolls back
out of my hand at a modest 70mph.

I'm sure many people somewhere could hear my 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!'

I could see it hit the pavement in my mirror as I jumped off the roadway, pulled the clutch in and hit the brakes.

'my camera!!!!'
(insert slow motion leather clad running female and mushy serious background music)

I go running back toward the point of impact like I've just lost a child, arms and legs akimbo,
totally not caring that my loaded bike, cash and passport are now unattended.

I see the poor camera. Totaled.
The memory card and batteries had ejected, but where??
The batteries are on the other side of the highway, but no card.

A man pulls off and asks if I need some help..
I explain the situation and he starts looking with me.
Lo and behold he finds the card which has a few hundred pics on it.

I am ever grateful and 100% to blame
A risk I've always took and accepted.
That's why I brought backup

The camera......

The Hero.......

The dumbass....

Day 2

Crater Lake.

Now it's started to rain.
I make it to the top and see a dry spot under a tree.
Just after I snapped this picture, it really started to come down.
Not your typical pin size water drops, but large drops accompanied by hail.
And hard.
Not even a real warning shot.

My dry suit was working great however, so off I go.....
fortunately it was just a hard pocket and the rest was harmless
sprinkles

What a nice reward...
and less rain

So it's at this point that I feel I can start to breath again..
Not just in this moment, but in general.
About 5 weeks prior to this I found out my father died.
I was down at Laguna Seca and received a call from the Medical Examiner.
I had to come back and deal with the situation, which was not good.
I'll leave it at that, but what I had to deal with burned a place in my mind, my heart and in my thoughts.
This trip was for me to find some relief.
To let my head stop spinning and try to make memories of new sights and smells.
I did zero research on where I was going and solely went on the recommendations of friends on where to go and what to see.
I told just a few people I was actually gone even though I had been pushing the idea around for a while.
I need this and solitude.
The end result was nothing shy of incredible.
There were many parts on this trip where I was rendered speechless and in total awe.
I'm definitely excited to share some of these beautiful moments.
I dedicate this last picture of peace and tranquility to my friends that lent me their shoulder and their ear during another trying time.

Heading out of the park I kept seeing all these snow patches.
Was pretty cool to see snow in July.
Esp since it was Africa hot on my way there the day before.

However,
Snowball fights for one aren't much fun and the tourists didn't seem to like getting pegged in the head by a stranger.
Oh well.
Back to the bike.
