Cajamarca, Peru........all day......no riding.......just walking around.

Had some food in a cafe. Fries, rice and salad and a hot grape drink, $1.81 for two people!!

Morning is bright and sunny, mid day is perfect temp. Afternoon cools off and the evening is cold enough for a jacket.

As you saw the ride to here was PICTURE perfect...and barely another vehicle on the road.

Oh they celebrate it big time......lots of catholics.

People set off fireworks in the City Plaza at midnight, right outside the church.

People were shopping until 10pm and then again today......it was really busy......lots of stuff open today and the streets and market full of folks.

The traffic last night was incredible........three police with whistles on our corner until 10pm, you couldn.t cross the road.

Kids out until midnight........toddlers and babies too.

Then again today the Plaza was full of people, just sitting on the grass and visiting, it was a really nice vibe. Of course we made friends!

These pictures are from our ride out of Catavina to the border of Ecuador and Peru. The last of the Andes mountains in Ecuador.

Checking out of Ecuador and checking in to Peru.
Simple as anything..... There were only four other people doing the same.

The the car was parked in between the two semi's. The blue semi trailer, with no one in the rig, rolled into the car and pushed it into the second semi.

This is at the border crossing. We are on the Peru side.

For those taking notes.

Skip this if you are easily bored.

After leaving La Molienda there is a little town just ten minutes away with another Hotel....but after that it.s a long way to the next possible plac to stay...so don.t pass by if you are running out of light.
Then on the Pan Am to Macara, once you leave the junction that goes to Machala there is nothing again.
The road to the border is great, only 20 miles of gravel in over 100 miles. Gas is scarce so fill up when you can. That means if you are half full still fill up, because you are half empty.

The border is easy.

There is a crummy hotel at the border, then it.s about half hour or more to Suyo. Three choices here.....we got the best.

At the road junction for Suyo turn left and go past the town square then up the hill, just before the bigger steeper hill starts stop by a small phone recharge shop on your right and a moto parts shop on your left. The Hospadje is on your left upstairs above the small moto shop.
The guy is not often there, but you can choose a room, the door is open. The prices are posted clearly on the wall in the upper hallway.
We had the woman in the moto shop call the guy as we didn.t have a phone. Super nice guy came. He showed us were we could park our motorbikes in a locked yard for $1. Don.t leave anything easily removable on your bike though, we think Colleens watch that we had on the handlebars was taken from that yard...not sure but pretty sure.

It.s a nice fast road from La Tina Peru to Suyo, and a fast road after for a while. Then you hit the desert and wind. Allow all day to get to Chiclayo. We passed there and got a room in a Hospadje in the La Victoria district south of the bigger city. Easy access to Pan Am south in the morning.

We opted to get off the Pan Am and ride to Cajamarca through the mountains on route 8.

You go left at City of God. Get gas. You.ll need all day to get there from Chiclayo.

There is an option of a Hospadje in a little town by the resorvoir, I think the name was Temblader...something like that. Other wise it.s mostly all mountain with no place to stop.

Higher up there is a cool looking town named Chilete, it had a Hospadje and various business, it looked quite colorful and nice.

Then mountain again all the way to Cajamarca. Tight hairpin uphill turns, first or second gear, Really tight and really steep.......lots of fun if you like that as we do. The whole road is very technical, and requires that type of skill......of course you have it or you wouldn.t have gotten this far! It goes on and on though, turn afer turn, not really any place to stop.

After you come down the backside of this mountain range and in to the city head for Plaza de Las Armas.........there are about a dozen places to stay, from $70 down to $7.
We picked Hostal Las Tejas because it has motorbike parking, and Two Kiwis are here. It.s a good place....low price and clean......and within walking distance of a lot of good stuff.

The area is super safe. You will see a family in the streets or Plaza well after dark. There are lots of places to eat and buy stuff. I didn.t see one bar or tavern in about half a square mile that I walked. Lots of small stores to buy drinks though, and cafes. Prices are very low except in the fancy hotels, and there are a few of them. People we dealt with were honest, polite and helpful in the main.

Pants

Hey Tuckers!

Normally I enjoy well-behaved children. But this wee gal in the picture above sorta' creeps me out a little. What's up with her funny little green pants? Anything going on here that either of you could elaborate on?

Thanks in advance for the pants clarification.

Just joking with ya! Happy Holidays! Thanks for the voodoo that you do!

(actually I think she's cuter than a speckled puppy)

BTW, I think most of that gray car damage will "buff right out."

Merry Christmas

Hi James and Colleen,
Excellent pictures of the mountains. They look beautiful, as the rest of the pictures too. I hope they continue to look good all the way south. Can't wait to see them myself in a couple of months. Hey Colleen, don't they have any laundry in Peru or do they just not hang it out on Christmas???
Ride safe and I hope you enjoy your new watch.
Love,
Mike & Ann
