Thank you for doing this and although we will miss you while you are out of touch on the Rat, we will look forward to your updates afterwards that much more!
I do have one question however regarding the DOT hazmat placards sported by Dr. Black. Do these ever get you the wrong kind of attention??
Mostly no attention at all to the DOT. Only once did a guy laughingly say dare he look in the side pannier. I wondered too what the reaction may be. But I had them on a BMW before and same thing, basically no reaction. The BIG RIG drivers like it. They are a great resource and friendly people.
If I ever get a negative reaction I will peel them off, they are just a $2 joke.
We had planned in stickering up our panniers, but we haven't seen ONE sticker!
You may notice Colleen has NONE at all.

Thanks
We are well prepared. Apart from the vibration issues.

We have done this type of longer distance vacation riding for 13 years now.

Here are SOME things we wish/could have done:

Colleen says she would have set SKYPE up at home.

More Spanish language always helps.

A watch or timepiece on the bike.

I bought a casual pair of pants and shirt yesterday. I just felt scruffy in some places.

Call your credit card companies and tell ALL of them your travel plans.

Get the BEST GPS chip regardless of cost. Mine was $24, it was so so in many places so far.

I would research the CA-4 document for border crossings.

Mapping.

If you click on our tracks link you will see a mistake I made.

I should have headed for Quepos direct from Canos, but instead took signs to San Jose. Unless you want to see San Jose I'd suggest the lower route.

It cost us a day, a room and of course more gas/food. We got the experience but can say we didn't enjoy it at the time!

You either need good paper maps or a REALLY good GPS. I didn't want to spend over $200 on the chip with the info on it. Now I wish I had. I've made about 4 wrong turns that cost us, some more than others.

Even though I am bound and determined not to get on the wrong track....it happens.....it's fine except for the time delays and cost.

I am following along on your ride report and loving your style Tucker. Nothing quite as spirited as a British flyweight. My lovely wife is from High River. The best lunatics are just south of there in Nanton, Alberta
PS judging by Colleen's taste in music she and i would get along famously. Safe Travels

A Clock on the Bike !

Hang on a sec ! Doesn't your GPS have the Time on it? I know that function is set on Mine as is Direction.
I also used Mine as a Speedo when I took the 250 down to see you as my speedo cable broke just before I left. Check your GPS settings Im sure you must have the option to set the speed, direction, and time of day. you can go to GPSCity.com website. They have great video tutorials for setting stuff on a variety of units. saves you time from poking about.

Thanks Man. Our collective taste in music is quite varied, but I'd say Colleen is a Folki at heart and I'm a PUNKER!

Thanks Matt. We are in Colon, Panama. This is the furthest south either of us has been. We are overlooking the Harbour and there are a dozen ships coming and going, it's quite a sight. I remember going to Preston docks and seeing these ships come in loaded with bananas and lumber.
VERY nice ride toady, we skirted Panama City, went over the canal too!

We stopped about 3pm outside Colon. Had a snack and a chat in a gas station café, then on a recommendation headed for Hotel Washington, Colon. It's at the end of as spit of land overlooking the Atlantic ocean. Well settled now, had a free beer from the casino.

Thanks Cuz. Yes I can choose either one but not all at the same time. So, sometimes clock, sometimes elevation. mostly direction.
Speedo is great for Kmph. It's BIG and central. GPS works great here, even hotels and gas stations.

I always wanted to visit Colon Harbour, now here I am!

I'd REALLY like to ride to the end of the road at Darien Gap...YAVIZA...and look at the 70 miles of unnavigable swamp to Colombia.

We'll see. We have until Thursday to rendezvous with our Cap'n in Carti.

That's ironic. The Tucker family of Preston are legendary fishermen.
