Look for a copy of John Hermann's book "Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps & Beyond". The 4th edition is out of print, but the 5th is due out in Jan of '14 (it was this month, but looks like they're running late).

There seem to be copies of the 4th out there, but the asking prices are absurd.

compare apples to apples

We tour 2 up on our own and with tours - small tours only. The biggest differences doing it on your own vs. a good small tour group comes down to the accommodations, making new friends and all you can learn from the tour operators. For really great value, check out Adriatic MotoTours - we've done 3 trips with them and all have been fabulous, whether we trented abike form them or used our own bike. We've also done our own touring (we now keep a bike in France with a friend) and we've had great rides and good accommodations, too. If going alone, don't forget to figure in the cost of a bike, the food and accommodations, maps/gps maps, etc. It can be done cheaply, but if this is your first trip, really try to get with a good tour outfit that has msaler groups) and learn some good tips. Adriatic gives you a booklet filled with travel tips for each country and town (tipping varies from country to country), they stay off major roads, provide good bikes with plenty of spares (even a spare bike in the van that hauls the luggage), and they are very knowledgeable about all the places to ride and have fun.

Want to do it on your own more than a few times? Check out buying a bike over there for future trips with Wheatwhacker: http://http://advrider.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=868979

Just DON'T fail to go.
