Talking 89 R100GS Rear brake Shoes

I have a rear brake now!!!!!! 89 R100GS I replaced the brake shoes (original glazed over shoes) with a set of EBC 861 shoes and now I have a rear brake that works!!

The EBC 861 is the correct part for this bike. Most of the catalogs refer to the EBC 859 which is the wrong part. See this link for a good photo of the shoes that are correct.

Do remove your old shoes and confirm you are getting the correct part.

Confusing

I just bought a set of EBC 859 for my 1995 r100 GSPD

So I really need?

I guess I'll find out when I remove the old ones.

Confused Also

Part # 861 looks like what I have in my G/S.
The ones I've seen in the GS look differrent and are slightly wider.

I just dragged out my spare set of OEM brake shoes for my '94 and they look just like the 859 variety.

I cleaned and tightened, so far so good.
Planning on replacing the pivot pin and needle bearing over the winter.

How is the search for another bike going ?

Poorly. If you hear of any leads over there, pass them on.

I had my g/s apart... Brakes are like 861

As I recall my GS is like 859 which is confirmed by jackd

Looks like a difference between monolever and paralever.

Biebs.... It is confusing that a 89 paralever has 861 pads... Pics would be good

I went through the 859/861 insanity last summer. After ordering what turned out to be the wrong shoe for my 89 R100 GS, I had a very knowledgable long time BMW mechanic, who also happens to be my brother, order the right shoe for me. I was going to be at his shop anyway, so I figured he could get the part and we'd put them on when I got there. He, and a very reliable Dealer in Montana both showed the 859, so he ordered the wrong set too. He knew immediately when he saw the shoe that this was the wrong shoe for my bike.

Long story longer, said mechanic and said dealer started going back through old invoices. Turns out that EBC changed the part number, or got it screwed up in their computer system, for that shoe that is used in many, many, pre 1994 BMWs sometime in the last few years. Prior, they had both always ordered 861. Unfortunately, a majority of parts fiches and online sites now show the 859, but that is incorrect. The 861 is the right part.

It must be early in the morning for me but your last post kind of puzzled me. The 861 is the right part number for what? If you are suggesting it applies to the later model GS's, I would say you are incorrect.

Does this make any clearer? or am I missing something? I am going to order a pair of 861s and 859s soon for the bikes.

The only way this could be wrong is if the pictures are mixed up on the Beemerboneyard site?

861 = G/S --- this listing shows only up to '87. does NOT show use for R100GS

http://www.beemerboneyard.com/ebc861.html

859 = GS --- this listing shows ~87 and up. does NOT show use for G/S model

http://www.beemerboneyard.com/ebc859.html

This confirmed by looking at my own G/S and GS
