DDR-BRD Border
I am just wondering, is it possible to follow the old East-West Germany Border
using just minor roads? My maps show that there are some small old roads on the both side of the border. They are likely been used by border guards. Are those roads open for ride? Are the roads paved or unpaved? I remember seeing some photos on those roads (might be on Motorrad Magazine) which looked like fun for adventure rider. How is it? What sightseeing places (natural or manmade) there are on the border? |

Hi Jan,
A lot of the old border has been removed. In a lot of areas you can't even see that there has been a border. Also a lot of the border area has been converted in protected reservations or some kind of wildlife area. It should be possible to folllow the old border, but a lot of those small roads are restricted for traffic except for farmers or forrest services. And they don't like motobikes in their forrests in Germany. If you check google and enter "DDR grenze" you find a lot of information on this topic. Mostly in german. I saw some sites where they list the museums about the former border. There still exist huge parts of that border that they kept as a reminder of how it used to be. Also as a memorial for those who got killed trying to get from east to west. Good luck with your trip. I think it will be a very interesting route.

Hi again,
The German motorcycle-magazine MotoTraveller had an article in no. 2 2004 about just what you’re looking for, a ride along the former DDR - BRD border. You can order a back issue at: http://www.mototraveller.de Ausgabe 2 2004 „Der Geschichte auf der Spur Mit dem Motorrad machen sich Vater und Sohn auf die Reise, der deutsch-deutschen Vergangenheit nachzuspüren. Eine Fahrt zu Relikten des Kalten Krieges durch die Landschaften entlang der ehemaligen innerdeutschen Grenze.“ Cider screwed with this post 09-02-2005 at 04:08 PM |

Here’s another German magazine covering a ride along the former DDR- BRD border:
www.motoroute.net/ 01/2005 Entlang der alten Grenze - Teil 1 02/2005 Entlang der alten Grenze Teil 2 These ones I haven’t read myself but I just ordered back issues since I’m interested in such a trip myself. |
