Eh? The sound of a failing fuel pump?

Hi! Had a small crash the other day. On my way out of a roundabout, I met some ice, and the bike met some tarmac. The crash bars, the luggage rack and the rear blinker took most of the fall, so I was fairly luck. Picked it up and drove it back home. Today I was planning on taking it to storage, but the beast just wouldn't come alive. The battery was good, I put in some fuel, but the only response I get when hitting the ignition button is FI priming and ONE attempt from the starter engine every couple of seconds. Doesn't seem like it's getting any fuel, or any sparks at all. I made a small video to try to describe the sound when attempting to start up. Is this a failed fuel pump, and why would this happen so sudden and not while riding?

Did you ride the bike after the crash or have it transported?

Sounds like it's hydrolocked to me.

Not real familiar with the 990 but I'm pretty sure the reason the fuel pump keeps running is because everytime you hit the starter you are resetting the prime mode.

Yup, I rode the bike back. Even started it on a later occasion to check if everything was ok. It was, but not now.

I guess I would try a couple things. If you turn on the ignition and don't hit the starter button, does the fuel pump stop after a few seconds? Do you have the fuel taps turned on?

Try either pulling the plugs and seeing if it turns over freely or put it in 6th gear and rock it backward a bit.

Yes, the sound stops like normally after a couple of seconds.

Either one will clear a hydrolock..... I personally don't like to use the rocking backward method and prefer to pull the plugs.

Is it possible to bend the piston arm, like shown on wiki, by using the backward method? Sounds quite unrealistic.

Puts stress on the tensioner side of the timing chain. Not going to do anything to the connecting rod or chain. Never heard of any issues in a newer engine. I just like doing the plugs.

The rod gets bend when the one cylinder fires and the other is hydrolocked.

It does not bend by pushing the bike by hand.
The motor seems to make half a turn.

Tried rocking it backwards in 6th gear, but it didn't work. Same sound still.

Hmmm,,,, went back and reread and watched the vid again... are you keeping the start button depressed the whole time and it's making those attempts on it's own or are you repeatedly pressing the button?

Hmm, watching the video after each half turn the instruments dim and the rev counter does a full sweep like when you first turn on the ignition.
I would check your battery connections and voltage, it looks like too much current draw for the battery.

09 990 adv

My 990 is doing the exact same thing. Turn the key on and hold the starter button and it clicks every couple of seconds. Never crashed the bike. Just likes to get dirty. I road it through the summer with no issues. Put it in the garage for six weeks of corn harvest. Pulled it out to winterize the motor. Nothing. It does act like a low battery but I put a good charge in the battery and try it again, and same thing happens. Tried another battery and the same thing. My SMT sat idle for the same time but started just fine.
No codes from the dash, just the dimming of the head light like low battery voltage. Can't find any loose connections.
I think I'll pull the head fuse to eliminate that voltage drain and try again.
May have to consult CJ. Maybe a couple of beers will help. At this point it surelly can't hurt.
