Back to Italy

My wife and I are heading to Italy in June for a month on our 25th anniversary. We are going from Rome down to Sicily, then to Sardinia, Corsica and back to Italy to complete the loop. Riding GS bikes. Looking for out of the way must see spots that get overlooked by the typical tourist.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The whole of Sardinia is really beautiful. Cagliari is worth a visit for the town and a cappucino at Piazza Yenne. There are better beaches than the Poeto (even though I was there nearly everyday!) but a trip to see the Sella del Diavolo is a must. Piazza San Michele is probably best avoided of an evening.

There is a really good white sand beach at Villasimius, (pack some flippers and a snorkel!) and the coast road is nice and twisty for the bikes.

Rent a boat at Cala Gonone, near Dorgali (only about 20 euros for the day) and potter up the coast until you find a unoccupied bay...

Also if masked horsemen trying to spear a suspended star is your idea of fun, you should check out the Sartiglia festival. I think it takes place around late spring, early summer so you may be lucky.

If you're planning on camping in the north, the campsite at Capo D'Orso did us proud for a couple of nights, nothing fantasic but decent enough.

Hope that helps!

Sorry, my mistake; the Sartiglia takes place in March.

I was married on Sardinia (by the Mayor of Tempio Pausania) - lovely place otherwise. Didn't have a bike when I was there and have regretted it ever since.

Enjoy the ride.
