Anyone want to dig up and compare the total number of laps completed in these winter tests to those of 2013? It seems almost certain that in the early races this season we'll see more mechanical retirements than usual.

A good post-season wrap-up by the BBC. States the obvious, really. The Mercedes engine is dominant, the Ferrari engine has a problem with power-to-fuel-consumption, the Renault engine is shite. Everyone has reliability issues. Williams is resurgent, even if the test times flatter them. And the Red Bull is still great in the corners -- Button said it passed him on the outside of Turn 11, a fast one.

Judging by the state of affairs leaving Bahrain, only Ferrari stand in the way of a Mercedes sweep in Australia. And they're not looking great themselves.

Yep.
Wouldn't be too surprised to see one or to Renault engined cars catching fire.

P.S. The begining of the season is irrelevant now, double point for the last race or last three is it now?

I think it's all smoke & mirrors... but anyway
this is the best part of the season... where all our favorite drivers are level.

What I never got about the Martini colors is the blue. It's not in their famous logo and to my eye it's not harmonious. I know it's a traditional color scheme but I've never cared for it. The Martini logo, on the other hand, is a timeless design.

The Q&A with Renault's technical honcho Bob White had an interesting bit. Beyond the expected niggling problems, they seem to be behind on software, if I understand these sentences correctly:

Quote:
When running, this immaturity makes itself known as shortcomings in torque delivery or 'drivability', which make it tricky for the drivers to find the performance limit of the car...

... Second, we must progress further on the torque delivery of the Power Unit felt by the drivers. This will include software and calibration work, with simulator and dyno and validation.

And some interesting comments from Ferrari's Domenicali.

Quote:
"I believe, we could see big changes from the first race to the second and from the second to the third, with everyone bringing in developments all the time," said the Ferrari boss. "At first, reliability will be the key, because without it you don't score points. I also think that some teams that are struggling at the moment will be able to catch up, while teams that currently seem to have a slight advantage could see a plateau in their performance, allowing the others to close the gap.

"From what we have seen so far, there are two teams out in front, Mercedes and Williams," he admitted. "After them, it could be us."...

... "One aspect we will definitely be looking at is the relationship between the turbo engine and the electric energy recovery systems and there's much to do in this area.

On the other hand, we return to Maranello knowing that the figures we saw from the car during the design phase have been correlated at the track and that's already a good starting point."
That last item also sounds like a software issue, no?

Am I the only one who didn't realize that an American is trying to get a new team into F1?

Gene Haas, a very successful businessman who owns Haas Automation and Stewart-Haas racing in NASCAR, is submitting an entry for the 2015 season. Haas also built and owns a wind tunnel with a rolling floor that is used by several races teams, including some from F1.

Haas is well heeled, albeit not in a Red Bull way. And he knows racing, getting into NASCAR in 2002. If nothing else, he sounds like a more likely prospect to lead a US-based team than did Peter Windsor.

Team Family Tree

Here is a family tree I made for all the F1 teams running this season. I listed the engine supplier for each team in the team title. Hope someone finds this useful.

Let me know if I messed anything up and I will correct it.
