High mileage KTM Adv

I have a '04 950 Adv, put 80k on the clock. No real problems with it so far. Has anyone put up a lot of mileage on a similar model? Just curious really.

I bought my 04 with 62k.

Machines don't wear out, they just become economically unfeasible to maintain.

I have over 40K miles on mine. My engine was putting motor oil in the radiator at 35K, so I pulled the motor. It turned out that the inner cover on the water pump side was warped. But, I did a top-end rebuild before I figured that out. The engine was really pristine inside. The only issues I found were, (1) the valves needed to be lapped, (2) one valve seat had worn out and was leaking oil down one valve stem, (3) the front cam chain was slightly stretched, (4) one of the front plastic cam chain guides was worn (because of the slack in the chain), and (5) I had the original 950 cams that were not properly heat treated and eventually pitted at the tips, so the 950 cams were swapped for new 990 cams.

I did most of the work myself. The only big expense was the new 990 cams, which ran about $500. The 950 cams probably would have continue to run without a problem, but I wanted to keep the bike forever, so I thought that 990 cams would avoid any unnecessary friction and wear of the cam buckets.

So, she needed some very basic maintenance at 35K that really didn't "need" to be done. It could have run that way for thousands and thousands of miles. My only real issue was a warp in the inner cover, which was resolved in about five minutes at a machine shop surfacing table.

Ah, yes, such good news.

Just bought a (meticulously maintained) 2004 950 ADV with 28k miles on it.

Going throuh the regular checks but so far everything looks good.

Well, there is the minor matter of a flickering oil light....but that's just fun stuff.

Got an 04 engine on my bench that went 50k miles. It broke a ring on one cylinder. Lucky the owner shut it down and didn't ruin the cylinder. Intake valves showed some slight wear, valve guides were good.

Everything else was like new.

MY ADV went I think 110,000 miles on his 04 before it was totalled. Send him a PM.
