No, they are just the OEM rings in individual packages and not a single mark or anything on the top ring.

The middle ring has the words "top" stamped into it, which position the shoulder down.

Ill check the other new ring, maybe they forgot to mark it

OK, Sounds like the ring with the mark is the top compression ring. Need to get this right.

I just double checked the part numbers and I for sure have the rings in the correct places. Also the other piston still has the old rings on from when I took it apart and the middle ring definitely has the shoulder facing down. Unfortunately I took the top ring off to check the end gap so I cant reference its orientation.

Are we talking inner or outer shoulder or chamfer? If outer and its marked top.....edit..that's right then...I'm getting confused.

Hey Charlie, both shoulders are on the outside of the rings and are 90 square edges. The middle is a recessed 90 shoulder and the top ring has a protruding 90 deg shoulder. Similar to the picture. I cant see any taper on the inside.

What do you think?

Also I just figured out where the washer goes from Pydons earlier post.......it is actually part of the split inner race on the right side balancer shaft bearing.

Whew....

From manual regarding piston rings:

Assembly instructions for piston rings
– Mount the oil scraper ring in the lower piston ring groove with the mark facing the piston head.
– Mount the compression ring in the middle piston ring groove with the mark facing the piston head.
– Mount the compression ring in the upper piston ring groove with the mark facing the piston head.

The other two are marked but there is no "mark" that I can see at least on the compression ring

The piston has a shallow groove for the L part of the ring just above the normal ring groove.

Maybe look closer at the piston?

Oil ring has an O on it, that goes towards the top of the piston, middle ring says TOP on it, L shaped top ring has no marking.

The clue is in the engraving on the "washer" just like a bearing is engraved.

I just rebuilt mine and all marks, be letters or an "o" were to face upward. The top ring can only go in one way. A used ring may have the "o" rubbed away.

I just broke mine in today, made 505 miles to Nashville, 500 more tomorrow. Looks like I didn't get the lower headset (steering) bearing in tight enough, the triple tree was loose by the time I got here from the pounding. Took some creativity to tighten it since I didn't bring a 32(?)mm open end with me, luckily I had a tiedown.

I've always used the larger of the two box end wrenches in the toolkit, I think it fits the countershaft nut. Put it over the steering stem nut, then shim the extra space with the smaller of those two wrenches. Fits well enough. And wedge open the fork leg clamps on the upper triple, as I'm sure you know. . . .
