1982 CR480 Lighting coil.

I am looking at a 1982 Cr480 engine for a right side drive frame I have.

I have been looking for a KTM 495 engine but have not been able to find one.

I am looking to see if anyone has done light setup for this engine.

Called Rick Stator but they did not have one.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

I've searched as well with no results. Although I did find some pretty sweet lithium batteries that would fit in my airbox and power a headlight for an hour or two... I have fantasies of making my 480 a pretty sweet retro supermoto

Do a search for 'E-line external stator' or 'Baja Designs external stator'
They are NLA, well at least from those places but the parts to DIY are available. The coils and rotor used by E-line/baja Designs are actually Ducati parts

http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/RO93.html

and

http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/G93.html

you may also find them on ebay and maybe www.hpi.be

you will need to fabricate a new stator cover/housing to hold the coils and also an extened nut for the rotor. Do a google image search to get an idea of what you need to make. Example
http://www.southbayriders.com/forums...125282/page-12
These set up will give something in the region of 150-200w from memory. They sold these kits for CR500's back 10 or so years ago. You retain your your stock stator/ignition. You may need an aftermarket IMS gear lever with a bend in it to clear wider stator set up.

So lights on CR480 is definitely do-able but its gonna come down to the dollars you have available, your DIY ability or finding a place to do the job for you.

Also try contacting www.bajadesigns.com and they may have some old doccuments on the external stator kits they used to sell for CR500.

The shipping would probably be a deal killer.

I do not need the whole bike just the engine.

Thanks for the heads up though.
