I alway take one, that way you can show that to local plod and if they wander off with it it's no big loss. Less than a tenner, post office does them.

Doesn't seem too hard to get its just whether its worth the effort.

Looks like I ma going to need additional luggage for all of the phrase books required.

I don't really understand why cover for some places is only available from some insurance companies. The Green Card system is managed by the Council of Bureaux and covers all the countries shown on this map http://archive.cobx.org/system_map/

Insurance companies that offer green cards are affiliated to the CoB and either issue the green card at no cost (as in France) or at a supplementary cost as in the UK. The green card only provides the minimum cover so I suppose if you want fully comp. everywhere this is at the insurers discretion.

International driving license

I still have my old paper license--european version--very old and fragile--like me---but it does last until I'm 70 unlike the photocard which only lasts 10 years (with no reminder!). I have just got my "international" licence for less than 6 quid--big post offices do them on behalf of the AA--this has my pic on it and lots of languages--lasts for a year and can be dated up to 3 months in advance.

As the ferry is going from Venice the route finders are showing that some of you may come through switzerland by Basel or divert via strasbourg/karlsruhe.....

Anyone think they will have space in a van or trailer for a little one ?

i will cover the swiss motorway toll and petrol share of course.

Noted and understand why--very good point.

Loz--The taxi drivers are not as old as I am--my license is so old that its held together with tape and cared for like an old manuscript and only handled with gloves on(now for some lateral replies!!)--and a horse and cart license may well be required where we are going for recovery purposes !
