So they can turn back to collect it as long as they haven't collected the next one already? Makes sense.

If he had pulled a Coma tactic and came into the WP from a known reference point he would be ~1:40 further up the leaderboard and we'd have a different race on our hands. At least we don't see CdP pulling a Gordini and giving an "if only"...no excuses from him.
I think you are right, a misinterpretation on my part - sorry.

If Coma and Despres had to turn back to find the waypoint, where is the time difference?

Looks like it was the fastest way for this WP as well, they even gained time on the rest with that detour.
Looking at the times coming in I think the detour gained them time - certainly they didn't lose any

It would appear that it didn't take them very long to find it.

If it is an open waypoint, then the GPS directs you to it with an arrow once you are 3kms away, if it is a masked waypoint, it doesn't open up until 900 metres away (as I recall)... Once you have passed a particular waypoint, the GPS clicks onto the next one in the sequence [which may or may not have a direction arrow, depending on how far away from it you are] so if you don't pass one correctly (but are close), it ought to keep directing you back to it... although you can force the GPS to move onto the next one by entering a code.

In the instance described above (with Coma and Despres), I imagine what is happened is that they slightly cut the course towards the ASS, then realised the GPS was pointing them back to another waypoint, so turned round and 'collected' it...

Brilliant, thanks for the detailed explanation Jenny! Can get back to the drama now

too good.
Is it the case that Peterhansel was told to back off so Nani will win, or have they both been told to not get too crazy so they all finish? I'm wondering whether Nani himself is taking it easier than he otherwise would be.

JBB stated it was easier to find it that way, on the last one they backtracked to.

Isn't that the second time he's done that? The other time he came in to the WP from "almost" the wrong direction and I think took the lead that day.

Sorta repeated you there. 205

Oi Villas

Everyone had the same problem finding the WPM, it looks like.

Yep, CDP effectively lost the win on day 2 - give that Coma has been Coma

If I recall he came from the right direction, everyone else was wrong

If PH is leaving, then he'll make his move to the front tomorrow and

Uh oh Bang Bang!

Dakar.com:

The Spanish Honda rider is slowly making progress along the special stage holding on to his steering head. He tried to make repairs more than an hour ago, but it evidently was not sufficient. He is now in the dunes and is having more and more difficulty finding the Way Points (compulsory points of passage). The end of the stage looks to be a difficult one for the occupant of second place in the general standings... Will he make it to the finishing line?
