Well Guys, as the Dolphins once said " so long and thanks for the fish".
Great Dakar ( as usual) just think it'll be whole year before we can discuss 'valley gate' how many nav towers Bam Bam will destroy, and other things work mates know nothing of, Well Done to Marc,Cyril, all those that made and sadly some who did'nt, for the greatest show on earth, oh yeah Mr Mini stick your team orders where the sun don't shine, its RACING, not a car park.
I'm off to lurk back in Orange crush.

Well, sad the Dakar over for this year.
It was really enjoyable for me this year with Coma & KTM being where they belong, my favourite Depres fighting til the very end on Yamaha, strong competion from Honda and Sherco, Laia's steady perfomance and 2 countrymen of mine #117 Mart Meeru and #133 Toomas Triisa making their debut.

One more thing. Being a fan of Depres I still feel happy for Pain's 3rd place. That was pure racing with no team orders involved and Pain deserved the place on podium.

Thanks to everybody in F5irehose for live comments and broadcast links, it really brought following Dakar to new level for me.

ASO- make those Iritrackers more reliable for next year please. We run out of fingernails quickly.

Great event, exciting from the very beginning. Thanks all for the contributions.

Anyone know if Ernie Young is doing an artwork this year? If not, anyone in particular we would like to nominate?

I have space on my wall next to Neduro and Pyndon that needs filling!

Great race, very exiting all the way to the end.

Really got caught by the snowball these last two days, but I made it.

Thanks to all participants in this thread, it has been great

Again, it was a blast to follow this thread. No better way to follow the race without being there.

Nice idea!

I'd suggest Barreda - but we'd need at least three pictures - to show all the parts he'd left behind!

My vote would be for #67 Robert Van Pelt - 20-year-old winner of the Malle Moto class, who almost didn't make it yesterday but for shear tenacity!

Rock on!

Bad form to quote myself I know, but it got lost amongst the humour & congratulations yesterday...

The final result shows Despres with a 5 minute penalty on the last day - effectively giving the stage win to Barreda - which in turn Honda were quick to capitalize on in their press release this morning I see... polishing the turd as best they can ;o)

The penalty didn't affect the overall result of course, but it is interesting why it was ultimately applied... speeding on Liaison perhaps?

Anyone?

Jx

edit: I can answer this myself now - from Cyril's Facebook page this morning:

Dakar - The Ultimate Rally Race 18/01/2014 – Stage 13

Fighting all the way to the end Cyril Despres (Yamaha Factory Racing) posted the fastest time on the last special and came to within 35 seconds of the podium, before being reclassified 5th on the stage, following a 5 minute speeding penalty. Finally 4th overall, his support rider Michael Metge finished 7th on the stage to be classified 13th overall.

Cyril Despres

"I attacked so hard on the special that my front disc got really hot, causing the pick up on my tripmeter to malfunction. It meant that I didn’t have the right information on my navigation equipment, which in turn made following the road book difficult – hence my speeding penalty. Still, I have the satisfaction of knowing I gave it my absolute maximum. Congratulations to Olivier (Pain). He rode a really good race and thoroughly deserves his podium place – a reward for all the effort the team have put into the rally programme."

Michael Metge

"Obviously I am delighted to have made it to the finish of what everybody says was an exceptionally hard Dakar. I am also really pleased to have spent it in the company of Cyril and been able to learn so much from him. He has been extremely generous with his many years of experience and for me the whole process has been extremely rewarding - I am sure it will prove very useful in the future. Thank you also to the whole team, both here and back at home, for all the hard work they have put in."

Thanks to all the F5ivers from an annual lurker! Usual fantastic job at Dakar coverage, well done.

Thanks to Mischa for his live tracking.

The first week was carnage, I felt for those who didn't make it.

What a last day! CD had a good old fashioned crack at making a race out of the last stage, congrats to him.

Congratulations to all of the riders who finished and commiserations to those who fell by the wayside :(

The Snooker commentary wasn't up to scratch this year, just saying
