This has to be a TEST of our will!
TUESDAY........ 1) Tuesday morning we go to the airport (10 mile cab ride) to see if the bike is at Tampa Cargo. 2) They state that the bike is now in Quito, but it was consolidated, therefore we must see the consolidator (8 mile cab ride). 3) We take a 9 mile ride in a cab to see the consolidator and give him $56.00? 4) They state we need an Agent (nine mile cab ride)? 5) Then we are told to follow this guy here then this guy there. 6) Finally the ENTIRE day is gone and they state DON´t WORRY (yeh.. Be Happy), come back at 800 am and it will not be long (11 mile cab ride back to the room). All this is with $2,000 hanging around my neck in the ¨shipping¨area of Quito. WEDNESDAY.... 1) Wednesday morning we show up at 800 am. Business is not open. 2) At 830 the receptionist shows up. We sit there and wait. 3) At 930 a guy comes in and says follow me (at least they all have smiles on their faces). 4) A short bus ride and we are in customs and wait and wait. We are told that there is a problem. How do they know we are going to leave Ecuador? I state they I would not have maps of Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.... If I wanted to stay in Ecuador. 5) After another completely lost day, everybody says WE WILL SEE YOU TOMORROW (yeh, we are all friends now)! Again, at least they are all friendly! We were asked to show up tomorrow and it will only be minutes! Yey..... ¨Be Happy¨! And I assure you that this is the ¨CLIFF NOTES¨to the last two days!

Well, at least your bike is in the same country as you (hopefully). I have always heard (and read @ HU) to try to travel on the same plane as your bike. Not an option in your case, but this is another example of why it is prudent to do so if possible.
Good luck, I'll send some good mojo vibes your way.

Bloody hell!
I think we should send Vance down there - you should have it within 10 minutes of his arrival.... Look on the bright side, the 'remember the motorcycle delay story' will get better and better when you tell it over years to come. Overcoming adversity has a habit of staying in your memory bank forever.. A serious question. Have you considered bribing the officials? In many countries it is the normal way of doing business (dont ask me how I know that....). I know you need to be very careful.... Good luck tomorrow! - wishing you good karma and positive 'chi'.....

FWIW, these customs guys have nothing reason to ask about you leaving the country. Immigration has already let you in the country for the amount of time stamped in your passport. Maybe they are looking for money. As others have said try posting on HU and contactin HU Quito chapter, I know there is an active HU member in Ecuador who has taken on these officials for many travelers. (can't remember his name).

Help in Ecuador
Hopefully you'll have it sorted by the time you read this, but Ricardo Rocco is the Ecuadorian guy you are looking for. Never met the man personally, but he has a great reputation for helping motorcyclists through the paper jungle. Might reach him through http://www.andesmoto-tours.com/ He is based in Quito. He has a petition going to put an end to this kind of crap, I signed it online.
Keep the reports coming, I am following you in about 11 months. |
