Hot Springs area

There are lots of great unpaved roads and trails around the Hot Springs area- it's an ideal spot for dual sport riding. There is a point called Max Patch that's on a gravel forest service road. It's a big, open field on a bluff with an amazing 360 degree view. You can park your bike and walk a short distance up to the overlook. There's also an old forest service fire tower not too far from there. I've stopped and climbed up to the top of that tower a couple of times, and both times there were some transient types hanging out up there who were very friendly. Incredible views from that tower as well, and quite memorable graffiti on the walls. One of the things I remember seeing was "Phyllis Diller walks round here at night." There is also a section of dirt/gravel road that runs right next to the French Broad River for several miles.

So I'm quite familiar with the area and will be glad to bring the maps I have and share some of the spots I've been to before, but I'm also curious to see who else has good knowledge of the area and may know some different spots I haven't been to.

I work Mon-Thurs, I'm off Fri-Sun, and I don't live too far away, so I can be there anytime on Friday. It would be nice if we could do some riding both Fri and Sat- maybe meet up for lunch on Friday and plan an afternoon ride, then on Friday night plan a longer ride for Saturday? If there's someone who has a GPS mounted, is good at downloading waypoints and likes to lead, we should be able to put some great routes together. I have a Garmin GPS with a Ram Mount and I'm very comfortable leading a group, but for some reason I haven't yet been able to master plotting a route on the GPS by adding waypoints- it always gets screwed up. So I keep reverting back to my roll chart maps.

Tyler, thanks for putting all this together. Unfortunately due to work obligations that are out of my control I am out for the Hot Springs trip. I will however still be watching this thread and keeping in touch with the summer TAT trip. Thanks again!

Tyler, I'm in for the cabin. If all taken I can also camp. What bike should I bring? I guess the only one I have

Dave, bring the big bike so we can stand a chance

Hey Ricardo, looking forward to drinking some more beer with you guys, and maybe even some expensive whiskey ?
Trying to get my neighbor Bob to come with us as well - I told him he'll have no problems as his "personal mechanic" will be there to look after him....

Hey Bob, expensive whiskey by big shot lawyers. Canadian Crown Royal suits my tropical taste just fine. But I'll be happy to contribute to some Ale (hopefully the pale kind) from a local microbrewery.

Hot Springs

Tyler:

So do you have a head count on those who have asked for cabin spots? It sounds like all of the beds might be spoken for.

Should we plan to meet somewhere for lunch on Friday?
