Went for a pootle with Woodman today. A leisurely cruise into Wairoa gorge.
I was unsure if he was erady for gravel as he looked a bit concerned with the thoughts of dust on his shiny paint.

Then he wanted to go up to the Ben Nevis carpark ooookay I agreed. It was steep & slippery. We breathd a sigh of relief when we got back down.

Isn't he supposed to do the ride reports in his own thread?

Still trying to unpucker my ass after the bike got away on me coming down Ben Nevis.

You know one of them slow steep rough descents when the engine stalls, the rear wheel locks up and comes round to meet you and youcan't use too much front brake because the bike is sidaways and the tyres are crap and it is a little bit slippery, and the bike keeps accelerating and all you can do is ride it out and hope like fcuk you get to the bottom in one piece. Oh and the bike weighs three tonnes.

Anyway we got to the bottom right side up..............just.

Was a good wee excursion and my confidence will increase on it in time.

After splitting from Padmei I rode up a river and did a few creek crossings to clean the dust off.

probably but wheres the fun in that for me?

He forgot to add that the rear wheel locked up as he approached a deepish cross rut.

Today he'll be having toast & coffee then working round the house.
I'll post some updates late

Decided to fit a flash crystal vision headlight bulb this arvo. Ass to get at but thats another story.

Once fitted the bulb would not go except on high beam on the pass button. Put the old ne back in and same story. Thought I would start the engine to see if that would make a difference, but the starter just clicked. Checked battery, and its fully charged, thought maybe I had knocked a wire off somewhere so dismantled the fairing for ease of access and have found nothing. checked every plug and fuse I could find and all looks hunky dory.

The two issues being the headlight and starter not going must be related so I beat the crap out of the starter relay and that made the starter click many times instead of one time per button push. Is the starter relay tied into the lights somehow to dim them when starting?

Do I just need a new relay?

Any other ideas from the collected wisdom.?

Your help/ecperience will be appreciated.

I will post this on the airhead section as well.

Hmmmm Are the terminals for the new headlite the same as the old? The headlites are wired thru a drop out relay that drops all load out when starting. Were you getting 12volts at the lite socket? Those connector blocks are a bugger for bad connections sometimes.

looking at my diagram it looks like you may have damaged the connection of green wires that run from your ignition switch that feeds the load shedding relay (Gr, Gr/blk, Blk, Rd wires run to it)
I would possibly suggest that your clutch bypass switch &/or neutral switch could be faulty - try disconnecting them & bridging them out.

As offered before I have a couple of manuals you could borrow.

When you turn on the ignition switch does your horn work?

Does your high beam blue lite work? If so that indicates that the loadshedding relay is closed as it should be.

Looking deeper I am kinda pretty almost sure that it would be a bad connection of those greenies or your neutral/ clutch switches.

Hibeam blue light does go, but only when the pass button is pushed. The headlight goes on hi beam only by using the pass button.

Horn works. everything works but the headlight and the starter.

headlight is same, even put old one back in= same result

I have some original relays we could try & see if it is. Failing we need to break out the voltage tester & see where thw voltage is lost. The trouble I found with the factory wiring is it all seems to go round in circles.

A BMW R100GS, unlike a KLR650 has a switch on the throttle side that turns the headlight on or off. Sometimes the switch can be turned off ergo the lights don't go.

Anyone have a problem with that? hmmm. Good now lets move on to the starter.

The starter has a magnet become unstuck issue that has locked it up. Solenoid is ok hence the clicking.

padmei came around just after I diagnosed the first issue and proceeded to pull my bike apart to get the starter out. Churbro.

Just replace the magnet housing from here. Make sure you get the Airhead one. It's an improved design that has the magnets clipped & glued in. You can also get a service kit for the valeo

lets look at the positives: you know how to open up the fairings & take the bike apart now, All the electrics look pretty clean as far as contacts go - no sand or dust, Once you've done the starter motor It'll be good for a few years, You didn't bend an allen key getting the airbox off. You can now swap the starter bolts over for allen type for easy access.

Umm just before you button the fairing back up did you put the new headlite in?
