Alaska In 30 Days

My best friend of 40 years and I and another guy are heading to Alaska from Mt. Vernon, WA beginning August 1st. My friend will be my hack monkey as he broke his leg in preparation for this trip!

The other guy is a professional photographer, so I should have lots of great pictures to post once we return.

My plan is to take 10 days to get to Fairbanks. Lots of side trips along the way. I see no need to rush as we are retired. The other guy wants to go to Prudhoe Bay, so we will part then he can rejoin us in Anchorage or somewhere.

I will attempt to post as we travel, but no guarantees.

Keith

Just got back on a trip with my son. Left from Redmond and spent 5 weeks. You will enjoy it.

KineticMeditation and I rented from Motoquest in Anchorage and spent 2 weeks and 3200 miles, finishing July 5. Awesome time. Waterproof gear is a plus. It was awesome; you'll love it.

A friend wanted to check the box with Alaska off his bucket list so we set out from Seattle on the 4th of Aug. Hope to see you on the road - we plan to take the Cassiar route Happy travels.

Have been planning this for a month. Rain gear and mosquito repellent was first items on our list.
I pilot a R1200GS with DMC Expedition sidecar. Plenty of room for all gear we will need.
Thanks for the well wishes.

Just finished around 10K including the return ferry in under 6 weeks with one of my sons. Good tent and dry bags as well as waterproof gear and you'll have a ball.

Highly recommend heated gear as well. My son and I had heated jacket liner and heated gloves. It made all the difference in the world. Several times we wished we had heated socks. Klim jacket and pants were absolutely waterproof and have armor for protection.

I would love to do an Alaska trip. Leaving from GA vs WA makes it a bit more challenging.

Safe travels! Driven the Alcan have yet to ride it. Will be a great trip, however you will get tired of seeing "midget" trees!

Camping too I see, good luck in Canada you will have no handgun should "Gris"
come a knockin'.

OBTW drive one way, take the Alaska Ferry back. That is the life!

Just a few things.
Bring a new air filter with you and change it as you start home. It's not the dust, it's the bugs that will clog it.
Ditto for bug spray and repellent.

Don't use a handgun (even a magnum) on a grizzly. All that will do is piss it off. If you see bear cubs, stop at once and find out where mama is. If you are between mama and her cubs, get the hell out of there ASAP.
