GIANT LOOP TECH TIP: GREAT BASIN SADDLEBAG FITS KTM 1190 ADVENTURE R WITH PASSENGER HANDLES REMOVED

The new 2014 KTM 1190 Adventure and Adventure R are great bikes for travel and camping. Our friends in Australia and South Africa could buy it months before our EPA had given KTM approval to import them into the US. Therefore, the first sightings of an 1190 Adventure, with Giant Loop Great Basin Saddlebag strapped on, came from the southern hemisphere.

Giant Loop rider Denny Wilkinson of Australia, had found the passenger grab handles to be in the way of easily mounting his Great Basin Saddlebag, so he removed them. Because the handles were mounted to the rear rack bushings, taking off the handles meant the rack had no longer had bushings to sit on. Denny had a set of spacer bushings made(silver bushing visible in above pic), to go in place of the grab handles.
I shared Denny’s work with South African Giant Loop rider Herman, so he too, could fit a new Great Basin Saddlebag. When Herman had a local machine shop make a set of bushings for his KTM 1190 Adventure R, he took the dimensions of the new bushings and emailed them to us, with a few pics of his setup to share.
The bushes dimensions are:
Outside Diameter 20 mm
Inside Diameter 8,5 mm
Height 23 mm

Pics: Grab handles on bike

Grab Handles off bike, next to new bushings

Custom Bushings

Rack installed with new bushings

Great Basin Saddlebag tops it all off!

Looking at this weekends plans and getting ready for the Lobos China Hat ISDE. This annual event is the largest off road race in Oregon and there will be racers from all over the North West, coming to lay down their best minute in the Tests.

My first trip out to watch a Lobos event was the 2003 Fall Classic, where Eric Wright, now the NorthWest Giant Loop Rep, finished first place in the 30am class, on his KTM.

We will setup the tent and display on motor row and show off our 2014 kit for the racers and attendees. Come see the bikes checking into technical impound on Saturday and the racing is on Sunday.

Giant Loop Rider Dan Ford, of Places Beyond, has reached Ushuaia, Argentina on his BMW G650 X-Challange! He wrote to us and said, "After 5 months, 17,020 miles through 14 countries, I've reached the end of the road in Ushuaia, Argentina."

Here is a vid Dan posted:

Places Beyond: Fin del Mundo and the End of the Road from Places Beyond on Vimeo.

Dan used a Fandango Tank Bag, Siskiyou Panniers and Rogue Dry Bag for his adventure. Conratulations to Dan, and thanks for riding Giant Loop!

Thanks for your feedback!
That isn't the usual experience GL riders report having with their bags while adventuring. Does the bag need to be considered for a warranty claim?

If you want to share more about your ride, hit my email below and send me more details and a couple pics of your mounted bag. I would like to know what I can do to improve your experience and/or expectations.

Here is Keith's experience with a Great Basin on the Trans Canada trail:

Fandango Pro with Buc-in Roll panniers

I turned the BIR panniers around to see how they do in the rain. So far I am liking it, and having room for the SLR is a big bonus. Washed the bike yesterday, left the Fandango on, everything inside stayed dry.

Great job Harold and all the other GL Folks!!!!!

SOP, nuther nice setup pic. I wonder how the Pannier Pockets will do in the rain, positioned zipper down. Cool!

Harold has made his way into southern UT, headed for Flagstaff and the Overland EXPO. If you are also headed there, swing by and say HI!
