Freight prices for bike to USA and return. How much did you pay?

I'm doing a USA trip middle of this year, loop from southern California to Prudhoe Bay and back. It is now decision time for the bike. Do I hire, take my own, or buy and sell. The decision is basically down to cost.

There aren't that many rental places that hire adventure style bikes that I can find online! The best so far is from Vancouver and after insurance exchange rates etc would be about $4100 nz dollars. There are cheaper bikes but generally have crappy seats. http://www.cyclebc.ca/motorcycles/suzuki-v-strom-650

Buying a bike means that if I could buy, fix, tyres, insure and sell it for less than about 4k nz (3k4 us) then that would be the go. There are some reasonably farkled vstroms on craigslist (I use searchtempest http://www.searchtempest.com/results...sk=&subcat=mca).

I did a trip to Oz about 3 years ago and the NZ freight company we used couldn't lie straight in bed when it came to costs, lesson learnt there!

Anyway back to the question for this thread, has anyone freighted their bike to USA in the last few years or know someone that has. What did it cost you?

Give Jeff Larsen at Mainfreight in Wellington a call. 04 4722520 He organized our freight to the US and can do other countries. Cost us $2700 NZ to Tenneessee and LA to NZ. Does depend on size and weight of crate.

Check out Go Logistics also. They were good when we went to Oz & I know they've done bikes to/from USA before.

Cheers
Clint

Look up a guy called TUCKERS who is on here on ADV,
(see Tuckers to TDF thread also)
He will sort you out a bike & maybe buy it back off you when you return, & he lives just outside LA

I shipped my F800GS in May last year with Get Routed from Sydney to Seattle, returned in November for $3000Aus return.
Just remember, whoever you use, make sure they know all the paperwork involved/required. Its all changed and for the worse. One stuff up, failure to get a certain approval etc will see your bike impounded at the entry point and returned to where it came from

Even Get Routed who regularly ship bikes to the US, got caught out this year with a last minute new requirement from the US EPA, and we almost never got our bikes at Seattle. There were 26 bikes in the shipment, and if just one of the bikes had failed to comply, all bikes would have been withheld

Another big tip if going to the USA. Fly via Honolulu, its a shorter flying time, stay a day to get use to the time difference, and the BIG THING, you avoid the F**King around with the Dept of Home Stupidity on mainland USA especially in Lax.

Enjoy, its worth the effort.

Chris

Contact http://www.HeffIns.com for Bike Insurance in the US. They insured a Hire Bike for me on my NZ License. Far cheaper than the rental insurance. You have to take a year plan but it can be cancelled at any time. From memory is was US$250 for a months full cover.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details

Also, check these guys out for rentals http://www.motoquest.com/our-bikes/

Wicked I would buy a bike

I bought a used DR650 in USA . It was 5 years old with 6,000 miles on it. It had big tank , modified seat , and soft bags with brackets . $3k USD There is plenty of good ADV bikes with low miles in USA all kitted out . I ended up riding 46,000 miles around North Amerika on it then shipped it home and are still using it . It has about 74,000 miles on it now . Only advice I can offer is when returning and shipping your bike home , have it organised in advance . I left it a bit late and just got out before my visa expired.

+1 on that option,i bought a dr 650 off fleabay for $2100 kitted out with panniers and a screen with about 20k on the clock, didn't, miss a beat, use any oil,but it had a butt ugly gell seat . i just slapped a bigger tank and some ktm bars and my custom bash plate and spent 2 months riding across the us.
i will do the same next time i get over there, but i'll leave the bike over there so it,s only the cost of a plane ticket.
re. insurance (which you will need especially if the law gets you),it cost us about $50 a month through a broker.

Buy/rent/ship?

The old buy/rent/ship dilemma is never ending. There is no definite answer.

I offer a vehicle buying service here in the Los Angeles area.

Also room rental and travelers help/workshop.

You can stay at our place and get settled and ready.

I also do vehicle documentation for travelers and vehicle insurance arrangement.

You don't need a California license, you don't need to live here, I can register a vehicle in your name.

Figure three to four weeks to receive your official Title after you buy a vehicle, to plan accordingly.

You can however ride away in one day and as long as you are not leaving the U.S.A. and get your title delivered on the road.

Email for full details and price list.

All up I'm looking at $4500 nz including the freight (smallest part of the cost!) handling fees at the ports, carnet, crate, storage and shipping insurance. Ouch.

Should note that the last time freighting to oz there were some costs that were not mentioned up front

So a practical budget is $5k, which is all dead money.

So I'm going to buy one over there and take my chances on the re-sale.

There are some quite reasonable 650 stroms fully farkled for less than $6k nz on craigslist lately so that is the plan now.

Sounds like a better plan Paturoa. Either way there are no cheap options.
