The last two times I stayed at dinner rock, it was inhabited by party animals.
The locals set up tents in the prime locations, for the whole summer, using them once in a while, maybe.

It's doable in a day, however, the ferries don't always connect. I'd recommend the first sailing from Horseshoe Bay, or check in the PDF ferry info, that's where you'll find crossing time and driving time info.

You may also want to check out Texada Island.

I camped at Powell River, at a really nice spot at the north end of town (Willigdon Beach), 5 minutes or less from the Ferry terminal. I still had my track from the trip so I'll post a link to it. It includes my run south from Lillooet since getting to horseshoe bay is a little less than intuitive for a first timer (if you come from the north).
