OPEN RALLY Map

Some thoughts,

Following the Dakar for several year,.............

What I miss is a OPEN DAKAR MAP.

Where we can sign in upload geotagged photo's and set waypoints.
Bivouac, stage, etc.

There is this potential of IT specialist in ADV, could they make such a map?

So that all people in Argentina China Bolivia can upload there geotagged photo to.

There is such potential, we do not see, yet.

How to open up that.

All the Dakar teams can upload there,.....................

all tweets in place of writing.

With all these opensource data and programs, discuss here the possibilities.

And the platforms to make it........happen.

Who has some knowledge/time to set this up together?

A MAP with different kind of layer (overlayers), with all kinds of information. Collected.
even with popup's for extra information and links.

This can be used by other events to.

Crossed some maps.

That would require marketing, if i understand your intent. And given our combined resources, I think we have one of the best coverages in the world, all told.

Yes, ADV rocks, my intent is a free opensource ADV map, with database, and make visible, where is what happening.

Permalink mapspots on forum, and discuss.

Where we could set waypoints, and link something, describe, all kind of information with a icon symbol, popup.

Our own map.

Just make it a simple project, for and made by ADV members. Let it grow from nothing to what ever.

And let the world enjoy the ADV DAKAR map.

Give it a push.

Example, use ctrl klickonmap to set new point.
http://www.netzwolf.info/kartografie...ers/poi_editor

code:
http://www.netzwolf.info/kartografie...poi_editor.htm

What we need:
Webserver with PHP and MySQL-Datenbank

What info we want with these poi.

So all of use can set waypoints and we correct each other
People in the bivouac, on the service road, the dakarfolower on the road , locals to see a overview where is what happening.

set waypoints icons, bivouac, start finish, specials, set spectator zone.
set waypoint icons, restaurant, toilet, etc.............. is it good or bad.............what happened on the road, what amazed you.
Give a description, Crash Carlos Sainz, saw mustache men, whatever, ...........
information category is for motorcycle, car, truck, quad, or usual Dakar ( check uncheck if as, layer for category)
link to url
link to url photo
upload gps photo

and much more

layer for fuel points for all out there.
all other needs hospital medicine resuenumbers

all opensource data free of use

Need icons, can you make them
need, can you.................................
etc.
you name it.

inlogsystem?

someone know how to set some up in github.?
So all can work on the code/page.

DID you get the feeling.

A MAP tells more than a list to search and read, it gives you overview.
On the road and the virtual Dakar world.

Take the ride..............................

Well MW, with your resourcefulness we should be in with a chance especially if we can get Hogwild on the google earth/ map links.

I know that there are some off line tracking systems as all the bikes have GPS of course, but to get open access to these and the days route in advance plus real time feedback would be a challenge to say the least.

We are all in, but for now I too think we have about the best live resource, that is unless you are looking for sponsors to send you there to provide some real time feedback

Keep up the great work though and looking forward (already) to 2015 and your input on media links.

It is more to give Dakar people on the road and at home a platform with a map. Interactive,............................
Discussion live coverage in forum.

Tracking, riders would be great, but that is a dream.

Tracking on android device, Osmand with plugin http://osmand.net/index.php?option=c...95-osmo-plugin

So you can see, other ADV service teams, where are they on the road.
So leave a android device on truck on the power, and let Osmand work with osmo.
Maybe we can see this on the map to.

Got you, so a "back of house"/bivvy/supporters tracker and information portal then - a bit like we have but much more recipient to information, somewhat in 3D

Would be great if Manuel was on the road again, although I recall he did say that time and connectivity was an issue.

mapbox is a great product i've been using which makes it really easy to pull data from a database, format it in GeoJSON and put it on a map with JS.

You can have custom HTML markers and tooltips for them and even customize your base layers and add overlays.

For the traffic this app would likely see you could sneak in with their free plan and use any old web server side language you want.

It's based on openstreet map linked to above. setting up a github an deploying should be relatively straight forward.

Myway.

you can use uMap to add points and tracks to a customized map. The tracks have to be gpx files.

I happen to be working on a touristic map as a hobby project. It is based on OpenStreetMap and unfortunately the website is in portuguese.
But I thought it would be nice to add some points of last year Dakar as the Spectators Zones from PDF files available at Dakar website.

I can't read Portuguese but that is a sweet app, it is very good looking. Did you do the graphics? I was thinking about this project last night. If everyone hosted their photos and videos on something like photo bucket we could embed them into the marker popups. The lat and long could be entered on a form by users along with the asset link or perhaps even embed code.

I ran into some challenges embedding video players into map popup on my last project but they can be overcome by making a call to an iframe and rendering the player inside that.

We could even have marker layers for photos of the different classes of vehicles.

I'd like to kick off a mapping hobby project as I had a lot of fun with the one at work.

Edit: Some more thoughts....

We could probably get an account on Heroku and put together a rails backed app (cause that is my flavor dou jour right now) use the free version of mapbox until we blow past the request limit. Putting some ads up or asking for donations could likely cover costs of the whole thing.

I do a little with openlayers. taking openstreetmap data and put it on a map, and use wms layers, which is opendata from goverments.

I like this example for poi scroll a bit down. text

german but a write up how to set up

Nice hope more forstep in the next weeks.
Wo can help to set up such mysql data base and log in part.
Who got the knowledge?

Just draw some track roads in Bolivia near Pisago where Dakar enters Bolivia this year.
"The border of Pisiga population will be the gateway to Bolivia"
There must be a waypoint there and some info.

Nice scenery to the left,................look on such a satellite..........

There layers with even Dakar in it.
Or a weather layer over it

Or other layers
National parks check the layer

Umap we must look in to it
Mapbox I am not familiar with.
Heroku I do not know.

Discuss it here,.............
