Cultural Imports?

We went by the Trader Joe's that opened this weekend.

I just don't get the hype. I found it to be a cross between a Costco with all the prepackaged foods and a weak grocery store having limited options. Okay there's a lot of organic stuff but it's all at a premium which is more than is already locally available. The milk is from CA by the codes on the carton. The eggs are more than king soopers on a matching product, and more than my local chicken lady for the organic. I'm given to think that part of organic and green eating is the whole local part of it. The Dr. Bronners was a good price, as was the tea tree oil (just a couple drops in a laundry load). And who sells bananas by the each and not the pound.... meh. Of course I live in a grocery desert so I'd be happy if any of them could bother to locate near me.

Seems like left coast chain coming to their people. Kinda like Krispy Kreem (which sucks compared to the local grown Lamars), and Dunkin which is actually not bad at all coming to feed the east coast influx. Haven't gotten to try VooDoo yet. I want to just slap the idiots who want white castle..... tho I've heard good things about In-n-out........ not like we need another burger chain in CO.

How can it be fun if there's not at least an outside chance of dying?

Trader Joe's Ginger Chews are pretty awesome, but I'll wait for the frenzy to die down a bit before stocking up.

I bought some crackers at one once while I was in Kalifoni. I remember them well. They were nondescript graham crackers, branded with their brand. They were remember able because they were not worth what I paid for them, witch was $.99. Worst graham crackers I have ever had! On another visit I bought a sandwich, and a small salad in a plastic box. Nice salad with all the trimmings, and a good sandwich, and something to drink. As I walked back to the hotel, I walked past a resturaunt where people were sitting outside eating lunch. Sort of looked at the menu, and found my salad and sandwich for several dollars less. looked around at the tables where people were eating, their meals looked much better than my "bag" lunch from trader joes. And I would have been waited on. However their $2 buck chuck isn't bad for the price of every day table wine. And the Penot Gricio is excelant cooking wine for seafood dishes.

It is different when they get to Colorado. Just like Costco. what I used to buy at Costco the price could not be beat. The same product sold here at Costco provides no cost savings. Trader Joes is the same way. Two Buck Chuck is 4 bucks here in Colorado. But since we vote like Californians here there is no reason for the liberal Californians not to migrate and to want their familiar stores.

I've never been the 'trendy' type. I can wait a year or so to go look around.... if they remain open that long. There's lotsa east-coast and west-coast marketing dipshits who think of Colorado is a cultural wasteland, populated with easily-persuaded dolts. They either learn better and correct their mistakes quickly, or fail....... without having a clue how it happened.

I really doubt Trader Joe's is gonna fail in Colorado.
Plan on those stores being packed most all of the time.
No different than Whole Foods.

The reason Trader Joe's took so long to open stores in Colorado is because of the liquor licenses/laws. They prefer to operate in states where wine can be sold along side of food. They are now at the point they want to expand past the easy liquor law states and thus they need to build a liquor store portion separate from the supermarket...meaning it cost more to build a store.

Old news.
At all their stores, it's been awhile since it was 2 buck Chuck.
$3 & $4 is the norm everywhere and has been.

Looks like Oct 1 for the Fort Collins opening, along with Costco.
If you live in this area you know how badly that building needed a kick of life back in it.
I'm sure the other remaining tenants have to be joyed to know end as it was barren in their otherwise.

Besides the cheap wine, that is where Trader Joe's excels; all the fancy TJ-labeld packed goods they offer. For the other basics I'll stick with Sprouts for most stuff and King Soupers for the rest.

I think you're paying for the premium experience of having two choices of peanut butter instead of 30 at King Soopers.

I thought this thread was going to be about Russian brides. . . or something from the Black sea region.

Carry on then. . . .
