Poconos in your mirror: so no cop

Assuming one from the east (CT) would be welcome among the fine folks and fancy roads in and around Wayne County in the great state of Pennsylvania, the question arises:

Where should we go?

while resisting powerful urges to stay at Beautiful Mt. Airy Lodge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk4S-XEjB_E

i've put together a loop and hope to elicit comments, suggestions and alterations.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/41.4...3e!1m0!1m0!3e0

sorry, my you tube fu is only weaker than my google fu but i can still use a map...

based in Lake Ariel, i hoped to weave in Rt 97 with the Bushkill area

thinking this may be a Saturday loop near the end of April riding street

please forgive the crude route list:

Lake Ariel - 191E
3011 S / 3040 E / 590 E
6 West to Honesdale
191 N to Hancock

97 Southbound to Port Jervis

209 SW to Bushkill Falls and the Gap Rec Area
Community Dr / River Rd 2028? to Stroudsburg
191 N to East Stroudsburg
447 N to NewFoundland (is 402 better?)
191 & 196 home to beautiful Lake Arial Lodge

doesn't suck, right?

oh, and where are all the breweries at?

Matt

I know the area pretty well. A better route from Lake Ariel, in my opinion, would be 191 for a very short distance then pick up 296. It's a nice hilly roller coaster road that takes you by the big wind turbines and the Waymart prison. Next, take a right on 247. Then, you have 2 options- you can take 371 east which takes you back to 191, or continue on straight through to 97 in NY. Or from 247, you can also continue to 370, which will take you back to 191 up at Hancock.

97 in NY is a nice, scenic road and the little town of Calicoon is cute. If I'm not mistaken, there is a brewpub-type place there. Farther south is Narrowsburg, NY, another cute little town, There is a historic fort there I'm told is worth seeing, though I haven't been yet.

From Port Jervis, 209 is kinda a pain with traffic congestion. Another route to consider is picking up NJ Rt. 521 near Port Jervis. It will take you to the really cool Dingman's Bridge, one of few privately owned toll bridges in the U.S. $1 will get you over the Delaware River back into PA in style on a wooden deck. This brings you to 209. Dingman's Falls is there, a little lesser known than Bushkill Falls.

From 209, either 739 or 402 will take you back to Rt. 6 or I-84 to get you back to 191 and Lake Ariel. Neither 739 nor 402 are anything special; I prefer 402 cause it has a lot less traffic and goes through the Delaware State forest. I know this road well because we have a cabin very close by.

As far as breweries (I myself am a big fan!), alas there aren't any I know of around there. If you got as far as the Wilkes-Barre area we have Breaker Brewing Co. and Susquehanna Brewery, both excellent.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, ask away!

Matt, it depends what you like to do. The whole area you'll be riding through has hiking, waterfalls, tons of outdoor beauty. In the general area NJ has a great winery called Westfall. Silver Lake Rd. runs between Rts. 402 and 739 in PA and has George Childs Park with some really pretty (and FREE!) waterfalls. Another fun place not far away in NJ is Space Farms- an eclectic collection of wild animals, antique cars, toys, carriages, anything you can think of. I enjoy riding NY Rt. 97- on a day off I'll do a loop that includes some of it. In Monticello, NY, there is a casino and horse racing. If you're staying in Lake Ariel, the next town over is Hamlin, famous for Kundla's BBQ- people from all over go there for ribs. These are just a few suggestions!

Thanks Feline. Be sure to post up if ever you're riding through southern New England so we can continue sharing valuable moto-info.

Absolutely Not!

Didn't you read the title?

I'm a guest on this soiree - a friend rented a house then filled it quickly.

of course, considering free will, The Constitution and the probability of you packing a weapon, who can stop you?

you'd simply have to make arrangements for the dark hours (i'm not comfortable offering you yard space for your tent not knowing the owner, neighborhood, etc.)

I with I could tell you more great roads but

447 south of Newfoundland down to 191 is a real real real nice road
never straight & a lot of roller coaster hills.

From Newfoundland if you take 191 north about 2 miles you can ride a nice dirt road up & over the hill I think it is creamery road out to greentown. where 84 county store is. I think Kuhn hill rd off creamery is also dirt & will take you under rt 84 & out to Lake Walenpaupack & from there you can take Ledgedale rd back to Lake Ariel.

Looking at your map 590 is nothing to write home about 191 is better 209 may look good on map but you will have traffic in towns. If you wind up at Dingmans ferry a good route back to Lake Ariel is 739 to Blooming grove rd to 390 north to 507 (Lake wallenpaupak in Hawley) you can get a nice lunch at the boat house about a mile north of where 390 hits 507.

Also that may be the opening weekend at Hamlin speedway

http://www.hamlinspeedway.com/page1.php

go after 8:00 & they no longer charge admission & you can watch the final races

From there the entire town goes to the beef & brew down the road

https://plus.google.com/109272655046...ut?gl=us&hl=en

Total dive you may be the only people with all your teeth but a fun place. & the wings are great

I don't know the road name but take 97 to the Barryville bridge, cross into Pa., make the second right and enjoy winding around and some great drop offs and crests too.

Feline might know the road, there is a big camp on one leg of it and almost all wooded, and a bar-grill type little place that is pretty secluded. It is the only business you run across.

It is a little roller coaster of a road.

Lackawaxen Rd. I went and mapquested it. It brings you back to the river, then ride to Masthope Plank Rd.? You really just can't go wrong up there. All good stuff.

Yeah, its a fun 30 seconds.

It's fun if you can route through there on a trip, but I would not tell anyone to just go there.

I agree. The first time I ever went through it, my luck was that they were doing construction there, so my experience consisted of crawling through in a 5 mph traffic jam of cars.
