KTM 1190 adventure std MTC failure, won't start. Need help.

Bike has been in garage un-riden. It has less that 100 miles on it. Went to show some family the awesome sound and the bike won't start. Hard MTC failure. Battery fuse does not fix problem. Help!

What do you mean with "MTC FAILURE"? Does it show that on the display?

Yes. And shows in the code failure screen when you scroll to it.

Couple of things....good charge and connection with battery. On center stand or side stand and in neutral. Kill switch is on run. Cycle key a few times. Then hard boot it, disconnect battery and then reconnect

I am sure you checked these but just asking

12.46vdc. Center stand in neutral. Kill switch in proper position. Cycled 20 plus times before going for the hard reset option. No joy.

-- called a local shop which provided the service I expected, no help. Nobody knows much of anything on this bike.

-- put the bike back together. Was ready to give up and tow it to a shop. One more turn of the key for t he heck of it. Started! Wtf over!

I am glad it came on line and started. Strange shit no doubt. I see your in the bay area...just curious what was the ambient temp in your garage?

Low 60s. I'm 7 weeks into my 12 week recovery from ankle surgery and so haven't ridden the bike except up the neighborhood. I would have normally had 3000 miles on this bike by now. My concern obviously is that this could happen somewhere where this is a big deal. 2nd time with no obviousness root cause nor clear recovery procedure.

Could there be a loose connector in the tail where the MTC sensor is mounted?

12.46 vdc may not be enough
In the winter when it's cold 13.2V is what mine takes to start
Get a battery tender with a quick access pigtail for long stays in the barn
When it's going to be under 30F overnight put a tender on so you know it will fire in the morning

Yeah, I'd start with the battery tender. A few garage starts of the new bike, and couple rides around the neighborhood...this is taxing the battery and it's not running long enough, or at high enough rpms to re-charge it.

Most new bikes have a parasite draw that over a fairly short period of time will draw the battery down just enough that it may not start. The ECU looks for the proper amount of voltage before it will let the fuel pump etc start. As others have noted, put the battery on a tender and see if it improves.

Once you are riding the bike and it is running OK, let the bike sit for 24 hrs and then check the resting voltage of the battery. If it is below 12.6 then I would replace the battery. A good resting battery should maintain in excess of 12.6 for a 24 hr period.

Hmmmm. Interesting idea. I did start banging on the rear subframe with my fist. Partly out of frustration but partly to give the lean sensor a wiggle. If it happens again I will record each step to more accurately determine where the problem is coming from.

Does anyone have diagrams of where these components are? Start peeling back the skin, you will see what I mean.

Before start playing with the electronics, I would substitute the battery for a GOOD one. OEM battery it's definitively not enough for this bike.

Good advice. IMO the OEM battery has a marginal amp hour spec for the big motor. Short runs with winter electrical equipment on may leave the battery in a partially charged state for the next time it is used. Just wrenching on mine to install LED aux lights without riding (can't ride as my seat is out at James Renazco's place) had its toll on my battery. The bike could benefit from a bigger battery. Anyone know of larger amp hr which will fit?
