The most amazing thing about this picture is that I've had these sunglasses for 14 years. They've already been to Thailand. Twice. And Spain once. And about 300 times to the mountains and desert. And Mexico, Puerto Rico, the pacific coast...Smiths.

You've never heard of Sukorn. Because tourists don't go there. There are only 4 "resorts" on the island. No ATMs. But we like it. It's kind of the complete opposite of Phi Phi and Sumuai and Phuket to the north.

We have some great food. This is the most photogenic, but not necessarily the most satisfying.

There are two small fishing boats outside our resort every day. I didn't think they were catching anything at all. I was wrong.

We rent/share a boat for a snorkel trip one day. Compare/contrast this crew to the Bangkok captain. Wanted to take these home with us.

Aquatic Doom engine. They are all turbo diesels.

We were there together.

I've seen these sheer limestone cliffs before recently...

Commercial fishing boats anchor offshore from our resort most nights.

Rubber plantations and agriculture are more important to Sukorn than tourists.

Doom Machine can plow fields.

Little goats are super cute.

Doom Machine threshes wheat. Are you paying attention, Rick Grimes?

Sharing a boat towards Kradan with our new German friends.

Would you know it. Some friends of ours are taking us north.

Kradan is on the maps. It's on the tourist radar. But not in a big way. Some big powerboats from Lanta come here to anchor and snorkel. At odds are the longtail boats that come from more modest ports.

Kradan has beautiful beaches and water. The snorkeling is pretty good. We saw a sea turtle, which was cool.

I didn't take many pictures here. We only stayed two nights. We stayed at Paradise Lost. There are not that many choices. This place is run by an American named Wally. Which is odd, because Milton was British. Run, not owned, because foreigners don't ever really "own" land in Thailand. The character of the place is certainly Wally, though. Which makes sense because he built the place by force of will.

If you travel to Kradan, keep in mind that there are no ATMs, and the only place that takes cash is the joint with the monopoly on boats off the island. We befriended a German woman who had learned this the hard way. She was out of cash, so I let her purchase our boat off-island with credit card and gave her the cash. I had the chance to practice my lame highschool German on her for a few hours. I was surprised how much I could recall, actually. Steel trap, my mind.

Pretty basic accommodations. Only place on the whole trip where we had a shared bathroom. Wally is in failing health, but he knows every guest and their backgrounds and speaks to you familiarly from his station in the main building. They have the best food on the island. And a really engaging Burmese employee named Ang, who I think fell into the place because he knew how to maintain diesel engines, and Wally has a diesel generator that runs 24/7/365. Ang told us he hopes to open his own resort next year in Myanmar. Ang can speak at length about the superiority of diesel engines.

This is the view out our bungalow.

This is the only other decent picture I took. This guy was just cooling off in the water, I think.

Our last stop is Lanta, which has probably 100 resorts and feels much more like its neighbors to the north in the main tourist draw.

We're working our way back to civilization.

The thing I did not know about southern Thailand is that it's predominately Muslim, not Buddhist. Not like the middle-east-women-wear-burkas and don't leave the house Muslim, but Muslim. The women have beautiful clothing. But they drive motorbike taxis and work in bars and certainly are integrated into the tourism industry. I didn't take any pictures, because I felt guilty, but it's like this.

We had some outstanding Indian food on the island, and spent a long evening with this fellow, who went to great lengths to try to explain to us what it means to be Muslim. The most lasting take away is that Muslims prefer cats, while Buddhists favor dogs as pets. Just accept it. Thai Muslim men have awesome beards, too.

His restaurant is just the street side of his small home that includes two sons and a cat that was nursing kittens.

I feel indignant that to appeal to the tourists, he has to tout lousy American and European food, while his native dishes (he's actually from India) are so fantastic. But so it goes. This was the best meal of the trip.
