I bring a SPOT device, emergency blanket, waterproof/windproof matches, a few snacks, water, and most of all, make every attempt to use common sense.

You can only prepare so much. First aid kits are about worthless on the trail for life/death situations.

Just a few weeks ago I was all set on getting a really cool tag in a pretty remote area of the desert. I realized that I was not prepared for it. Street gear, SPOT device attached to the bike, and not enough water to last out the day. Sadly, I turned around and called it a day.

Your brain is the most important survival tool you have.

We'll, being that you didn't say "what came first, the egg or the chicken egg", I'll have to say the egg came first, since Dino's and reptiles were laying them before birds or chickens existed.

Do I win a prize?

I always take my Spot and a radio. I also take basic tools to fix my bike. The KTM tool kit is amazingly complete, just add a pump (I use a CO2 pump that can also work manually if I run out of cartridges), a 21" tube and 2 tire levers. I have a small bag with a compass, emergency blanket, Percocet (I like it better than Vicodin, it's more fun ), Immodium, a fire starter, super glue, duct tape, paracord, and tweezers.

Like Rob advised, most of what I bring has dual uses. For example, the duct tape can be used as a band aid, to fix a tear in gear or to put over the mouth of a riding partner who won't STFU. It might even fix a hole in your inflatable sheep!

There's a few things in life that I love other than booze, chicks and bikes, and one of them is proper sentence structure, conjugation and punctuation. Another one is tooling douche bags who by their choice of questions give up their lack of knowledge of the subject of which their question is aimed.
