How to get past Burma?

Okay,

So I got some really helpful answers to my question about getting a bike from Oz to South-East Asia. So now for the next hurdle in the Brisbane-Norway overland route ... Burma ...

I have been searching all over the internet but everything says that the only option for getting from South-East Asia to India is to fly because you can't get into Burma on a foreign bike.

What experiences have others had in this regard? Are there other overland options like trains or trucks? (Whether through Burma or China). Or is a flight the only option?

I have a friend who has just moved to Burma but I don't think that will help me with getting a bike into the country ... or would it? Hmm

Anyway, tips appreciated. And sorry for all the questions.

Things seem to be slowly changing. In the last 1-2 years, some (only a few) have actually ridden/driven through Burma. BUT, do no expect it to be easy to get the permits, will most likely take you months to arrange, and cost something, too. But it's not 100% un-doable any more, instead it's only 90-something percent un-doable....

(plus there's the problem of east Indian states requiring permits before you even get to the border of Burma).

Some friends have just done it going the other way but I am not sure how they arranged it, there are a few posts on the HUBB about it which might be helpful.
