Jump starting through battery tender Sae pigtails

Just thinking about the what ifs in the middle of no where. Has anyone here jump started a run down battery by connecting through two bikes' Sae battery tender plugs? Thx for any insight.

The battery tender plugs on the dash will not have wires thick enough to jump start the bike you could have one bike running charging the other bikes battery through the plug but this will take time......

We have a short one direct to our battery and it would be more than adequate as long as you were not cranking and cranking, you would have to make sure + and - were on the same page but it could work easily.

Trick would be to leave them connected with the charging bike running to boost a little power before trying the start.

Ohh Kiwi - I am not sure they would unless you only need a little boost. Last time I jump started my big girl I needed some pretty heavy cables (and connected it to a car battery).

I have found that if the battery is that discharged though, the bike is unlikely to run properly after starting and jumper cables are removed.

If you are using the SAE plugs, I would recommend leaving connected for a while before attempting to start, like the Sheep Shagger said.

I have seen people melt the insulation off battery tender wires numerous times. It is simply not a good idea. If your battery just needed a little boost, it would probably work, but the only way to check is hook it up, and see if anything goes terribly wrong.

Look at the difference in wire size, between the battery tender plug, an the battery cables going to the starter.

I've seen some very heavy duty sae plugs, with 12 ga. Wire (much thicker than normal), which would be much more likely to work, but even so, still not recommended.

Yeag agree with all the above, OP says run down, not dead battery and yes this will change things.

I know we can start ours on a run down battery through SAE cos we have had to do it, was not connected to another bike rather straight off another battery and although sluggier it started (luckily).

If it were flat I think you would be asking for a fire

We also push started Maya at 4000 meters in Peru, just enough grunt to start to wind her over, push, clutch, 1st gear, press starter fired into life

We got a new battery in La Sarena ..... no more worrisome days!!!!

Definitely would let them just sit connected and give a slight charge.

I'm talking after someone left their light on and ran the battery down.

Is there any problem/danger to electronics in boosting the 9X0 through the main power connection on the lower right side, with the ground on the motor. Much easier to get at than the battery.

No problem as long as you get a good ground.
Avoid ground on footpeg, the pin might be dirty and current will flow only through the spring (and melt after a few secs). Ask me how i know

Connect a SAE jumper cable permanently, just lower your skiplate and connect it, or let it rest on the skid plate a pull it out when needed.
I surely loved my jumpers when my battery died up in Jujuy in Argie

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Not heavy enough gauge for jump starts....just enough for trickle charging....no doubt about it......

Thats what it is there for at the least the one on the 990, the 950 didn't have this unless you retrofitted it.

Ours worked, not dead flat but not enough to start by itself.
