Around the USA on BMWs

That's the plan, around this great United States on a pair of BMWs, Erik and Bill, in the month of April, year 2014. No record-setting attempts, just a ride to see some old friends, meet new ones and see the countryside. We'll leave Los Angeles on the 1st of April, ride south to San Ysidro, take a couple pictures and then head east. We go to Florida, Maine, Washington and back to California. Pictures all the way. Experienced riders but old bones call for staying in motels or private homes. We'll talk about equipment, people we meet, experiences we have and the sights and sounds of our country. Hope you can join us and have as much fun as we plan to have. See you on the road.

Last Minute Planning

Erik and I are in the last-minute planning stages. Need to install new tires before we begin. Have been spending a lot of time with emails, phone calls and other details. Anticipate bringing too much stuff but once we get started it will all settle down to an acceptable routine. Once we hit the road I'll give you an update on our equipment and anticipated routing. First stop will probably be Phoenix, Arizona (after taking a picture in San Ysidro, Ca). Looking for friends along the way and would like to take your picture. Give a shout. Probably cross the country on I-10 to Florida.

Sounds great. Look up West Virginia, it's a ton of fun. Are you on GS bikes, or street oriented bikes?

Greg.

If you come by the DC area I would be happy to do a little maintenance on your bikes and give you a good meal. Maybe ride along a few hundred miles.

Pit stop with tools (incl tire changer) here in Vermont if needed. Only one guest bed and you'd probably have to share it with a dog or two, but the offer's there.

Almost ready to leave

Almost ready. Have been talking with suppliers and friends. looks like this coming Tuesday (4/1) will be departure day. Erik is working hard to put both bikes in shape (thank God because my wrenching talents are non-existent). Interesting to see how people react to announcements of the trip. Some immediately change the subject to something that seems to interest them more, others accept the announcement with calm acceptance and still others are curious as to why? when? where? While we do have a rough itinerary we find that slavish attention to a schedule inhibits opportunities...so while we now where we will stay the first night (Phoenix is our plan) after that we have maybes and hope-for's as destinations. We should make Miami on the 6th, Madawaska, Maine on the 14th. Madawaska is our mid-point and we have allowed a couple extra days to explore the Nations's capital and the space museums. Details we will work out as we move along. Stay tuned for what we actually do.

The Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson is great. Maybe out of your path though...

Sounds like the beginning of an epic adventure! I-10 from CA to NM...Zzzzz. If you want to see the beauty of Arizona, think about Highway 90 from Benson down through Sierra Vista, highway 80 from SV through Bisbee, Douglas, & back onto I-10! Bisbee is our little secret & is a great ride, as well as a super overnight destination!!
