Todos Santos Cuchumatan - Quit my job...going to the drunken horse races
Tomorrow is November 1st and in a little mountain town about 45km from Huehuetenango, Guatemala a bunch of men have already begun to get pissed. Drunk. And tomorrow they will ride horses. Drunk. And I will be there.
I'm currently in the middle of a solo motorcycle trip beginning in Williamsburg, VA through all parts of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. I'm here until my money runs low, Tequila is outlawed or I just find a place somewhere along the shores of Lake Atitlan and stay here forever. It's that kind of place.
So I quit my job. Packed the bike and I'm going riding.
Not sure where to start this ride report as I'm now about dead center in my travels. At least I think I am. Who knows because everything planned always changes, serendipity has been my companion and life is full of surprises.
My trip has been nothing like I had thought before leaving and everything more.
Today I woke up in Panajachel, Guatemala. I packed my bike, rode to where this city begins and caught up to some guys on Big Wheels that were drifting down a busy mountain highway for kicks. This is what happened...
I passed a tattoo place downtown. Why not get a tattoo while in Guatemala? I'm solo. No schedule and no plans that night, just like most nights. Talked to the owner of the shop, got off on a tangent as he showed me videos on YouTube of his new hobby and then a somewhat promise to meet him and his Big Wheel drifting crew in the morning to video their antics from the GoPro mounted on my helmet.
This is Guatemala and this is life here.
I'll post as I can, backtrack to those great days of riding in Mexico, a missed rally in Creel, the joy of being a gringo in a natural Mexican city, getting pissed drunk with a Canadian in a cheap hotel in the frontier zone while bales and bundles of drugs get unloaded only a few feet away, a Guatemalan housekeeper with a thing for gringos with big bikes and blue/green eyes and a horse race. A drunken horse race that happens tomorrow...
Here we go.
