Coming home - getting back a hack

So this last weekend I did a fly and ride to grab a hack I had sold a year ago to a wonderful gentleman in Colorado. The weather here in the Midwest has not been cooperating (about 20deg below what it should be), but what the heck, i needed to go for it.

The hack was put together originally by me (well by scrambler cycle here in WI), and then sold due to space and other issues and trailered out to CO. It is a 2006 DL650 vstrom, with a modified Hitchhiker sidecar. Ever since I sold it, I have missed it like crazy, so I jumped at the chance when the offer came for me to buy it back!

They are stock trees. There really is no need to change them, at least not that I feel, as this is the best tracking rig I've owned (had 4 so far), and really easy to steer, etc....

I may think about a LL front end if my sidecar guru decides he wants a bike to practice on (you listening Kevin) ,but I see no need to shell out some big $ for it at this point. Many other improvements on the way first.

I wondered about that. I have a newer Vstrom and find that it steers very light on its own without any sidecar and from what I know about sidecars, they go to the different trees or front end to make the rig easier to steer.

No prob. I think some stiffer springs up front, and a rear car tire are all the planned on the bike for the moment. Most of the $ is going to go into the sidecar and making the monkey comfortable at this point.

Good to hear you have it back. How was the ride home? A bit on the cool side?

About those leading links....
I am actually in the process of building a set right now for my Quota rig. Where it goes from there I'm not sure.

Actually it really wasnt too bad. CO and NE were pretty warm that day, and I was quite layered up, but the heated grips were definitely in the "on" position.

Sunday coming through IA and MN was cooler, but mostly due to the wind blowing off all of the snow still on the ground up in these parts.

Guess I got lucky in terms of timing, they are talking more snow this weekend!!

Kevin, you should post some pics of the Quota progress on here or your blog, im sure it is a neat process and a good informational build!

I will be watching this, I am getting ready to mount a Hitchhiker to my KLR. I ordered what I need from DMC a few weeks ago.
Where did you get the sidecar windscreen in the first picture?

Good job on scoring a hitchhiker! The windscreen is a homemade one, but I am getting ready to order one form here

Im trading emails with the right now about size, etc, and will post once i learn more. What size hitchhiker do you have? My understanding is they made a standard (about 21" wide in cab) and a widebody (31" i think).

Hopefully the windshield is standard. Im also looking at making a removable top (rain-fly). There have been way better modifications since these photos (these were taken before I sold it the first time), so I will try to get some new ones tonight. They include a ladder rack on the hood, new seats, and a tonneau cover from a heavy canvas sail material.

I also will be adding an old alum teton happy trail pannier I had around as a sort of "monkey storage glovebox" between the hack and the strom.
