Transfăgărășan road in Romania

Has it been a cold winter in Romania this year

I would like to ride the Transfăgărășan pass in mid May, is it likely to be open then?

Not very likely. Usually 1-1,5 months later.

Done it mid June, snow patches were still there. Next day was driving from sibiu to brasov and could see some really bad weather up there. But you never know, mountains are always more prone to rainy weather. if you can postopone it for june would be better by far

no chance to do this in May.. sometime Transfagarasan and Transalpina are opened just 2-3 weeks/year. best is to do this in August or September... and don`t think to avoid the concrete barriers... there is a good reason Transfagarasan is closed. you will be stuck in snow or worst you can have part of an avalanche.

Wow, this picture is not just current - it's from the future :-) Anyway, I've done Transfagarasan last September and the road surface is awful, so much so that you hardly have the time to enjoy the surroundings. The neighbouring Transalpina is actually a better ride IMHO.
