Thumbs Up on Under-Seat Battery Relocation

Really!
Moving the weight back and up left the bike feeling easier to bank over, especially in a left-right-left sort of twisty stretch.
And much easier to wheelie! Jeez, I loved this bike before, but it feels like it lost 40 lbs, and it's hard to stop grinning when I'm blasting around on this thing.





I have seen some discussion here about potential drawbacks to raising an 8 lb battery to a higher location in the chassis. It turns out that the dynamics of motorcycle chassis performance involves much more than where the CG is located.
When Honda first debuted the NSR 500 in 1984, their engineers thought they had designed a real game-changer by putting the heavy fuel tank under the engine, and the light, thin-walled exhaust pipes under the traditionally located fuel tank shell.




They were wrong.
The bike handled sluggishly, resisted quick transitions, and pushed the front end badly into corners.
They learned that when the rider counter-steers the bars, and we feel the bike leaning over, what actually is happening is we are steering the wheels out from underneath the bike. The heavy fuel tank was resisting this process, and turned sluggishly. Under braking, without the weight of the fuel above the engine, not enough weight transferred to the front wheel, and it pushed wide through the corner.

Well, anyway, I'm having a blast with the way it makes the bike feel, and I would recommend this mod to anyone who pushes their bike hard.

You got a walk-through on how you did your mod? What did you do with the existing battery cables? Granted, I haven't pulled the tanks off mine yet, but I'd like to have some idea of what I'm getting in to by doing this.
What bike is this, anyway? 950 Adv?

Yeah I'd love to know what was involved in this too. I also see your fuel pump is up high. I agree with the logic here. Get those parts in an area that doesn't get submerged, muddied, and pelted every ride. I will never understand why the battery is down there.

I moved the starter relay up to just in front of the battery, and was able to use most of the oem cables. It was actually kind of fun.

This has been on my to do list for a long time. The adv is soooo heavy in the front. Its got to be a huge improvement.

Here's a look at what I did to fit the battery into the tray. I cut slots to run the cables through, then the gasket fits over the top of the cables to help seal the area somewhat-



There's still room for the tool pouch, and a couple small items in the tray.

I have my lithium in a separate box when you have the pump, next to a itg air filter.

Needs a metal box to sit in and a proper battery strap. Wont last long like that, especially if it was moved to improve offroad capability. Harleys been puttin it there for years!

Well,pretty much every manufacturer has been putting batteries there for years.
I cannot imagine why you would need a metal box instead of a durable, noncorrosive plastic one. Or why a battery "won't last long" like that.
And making a comparison to a Harley?
Jeez, what'd I ever do to you?

My battery weighs a pound. I don't see this mod making any difference at all for me. Do you actually really feel the change? I'm all about ditching extra weight.

I really don't think moving a lithium battery up there would be very noticeable.
Moving the chunky OEM battery works because you can definitely feel the increased weight transfer under braking or acceleration.

I moved my battery and starter relay up, just cos its easier to access, and doesn't have to live under water or get covered in road salt etc, I've got through 4 starter relays in 3 years due to corrosion, my latest is still shiny after a year in its new home. don't worry about the extra poundage up high, i dare anyone to really tell the difference.

Nah not really, its surrounded by plastic under a plastic seat, can't go anywhere. Mine has been sitting loose in there for five or six years, never had a problem with it and it gets ridden offroad a lot, 130kph jumps on back roads when I can find them
