Thats my opinion. Its proven that loud pipes make no difference to cars that are in front of you. Nearly all the sound is behind you. And they are annoying. Bad for motorcyclists in general. Of course I don't like loud cars either.

I saw a tee shirt the other day. If it's too loud, you are too old.

It may have been right.

At my advanced age I don't see much good from the in your face attitude. And that's what loud pipes represent.

I love louder exhaust on a bike, BUT SOMETIMES it is too loud. I was driving my flatbed dually dragging a big trailer through the hills on 337 in Leakey area and I was daydreaming trying to get up one hill at about 45mph when this sportbike came from behind at full bark passed me and was out of sight in 2 seconds and it skeered the P out of me. And I love aftermarket pipes to a degree, BUT this one must have been sawed off from the raspy shrill that caught me off guard. Anyway, . D.

Loud pipes are like diareah for the ears.

I prefer reflective materials, white or hi viz helmets and BRIGHT auxiliary lights , and paying full attention to every vehicle around me and plan for each one to hit me so I can react accordingly.

Riding on a back road see, and hear a leo coming up behind me in a fully lit up Crown Vic with siren on. I pull over and let him by and now I am behind him. Woman in a SUV coming the other way takes a left turn in front of him causing him to brake aggressively. I don't care how loud your exhaust is she would not have seen, or heard you.

I'll just add my two cents. I've ridden through the greater Southern California region many times in heavy traffic - splitting lanes seemingly ad-infinitum on the 5, 405, 10, 110, 210, 15, ... with stock pipes. People will still give some room, some not. The loud pipes crowd seems to think they need them. I don't have them and still have few to no problems. Their mantra of "loud pipes saves lives" is simply to justify their own insecurities and nothing about safety.

How loud do they have to get!

With the over insulated quiet "bubble" of today's modern automobile I question just how loud exhaust systems are going to have to be for today's drivers to hear you. I think a well ridden motorcycle far exceeds the benefit of a loud exhaust system.

Yes, when bikes are approaching slowly.

And that's the only time I expect it to work for me. Better than nothing.

I've never replaced a stock exhaust with after-market, but I didn't object to buying a bike with a not-too-loud (IMO) slip-on installed by previous owner. When I was looking at the bike before purchasing, his neighbor rode by on a truly loud cruiser. It really put the bike I was buying into perspective.

FWIW I have stock Euro 3 muffler on my other bike. The difference between how they're treated in traffic is slight. Both have driving lights which get attention too. I think the louder one has a slight edge in getting noticed.
