Rainbow Trail--Salida

Visiting Salida with my WR250R and was curious about the famous single track, RT. Drove up in the 4wheel and got stuck 40 yards short of the first signboard up 108. Walked up in 1-2 feet of snow to this sign. "Spring has sprung" is still just a positive thought here.

Found this:
http://www.gorp.com/parks-guide/trav...ev_066062.html

Motor use is limited to the Wet Mountain area from what it says.

Better read ALL the info:
http://staythetrail.org/maps/viewtra...ail_id=47&sv=1

Also:

http://rickramsey.net/RB1.htm

There is a short section of the RBT (about 5 miles) at the west end that is closed to motorized (at the Kismuth Mine); otherwise the remaining 100 miles is open to motorized.

ride reports

there are a couple excellent RR's out there. Takes 2 days with a campout half-way. 100 miles of single track, some knarly stuff. Not for the beginner. Me, I think I'd take five miles and feel good "I did 5% of the RBT, hur-rah!"

According to my tracks, 112 miles end to end, add 16 if you ride back and forth to Westcliffe for gas.

We are planning to do this in one day this year if you would like to join us.
Yep - we are a bunch of masochistic idiots who like to do stupid things.

A back and forth Rainbow Trail ride? That sounds like fun, in a sick and twisted way!

If anyone finds the PCL's from both my knees out there on the RBT, pick them up for me, I'll pay shipping.

I guess I should put that trail back on the bucket list, I only made it ~40 some odd miles before blowing up my knees. I guess in some ways it will aways be with me!

I'm thinking this year just one way, but if we finish and we don't die this year, the following year will be an out and back over a weekend.

Update

We rode the Tenere to Westcliff today for lunch. For kicks we took 170/171 over to Gibson Trailhead to see the snow on the RBT. No surprise, just as deep.

Yeah,I live a few miles outside of westcliffe. I didnt know how gnarly it was, so I rode from hillside to westcliffe one afternoon... it was my third time being on a trail on 2 wheels. Came away wondering why anyone would do that for "fun".

Now i Cant wait to do more.

sent from my fone!
