What is this and is it necessary??? 2014 GSAW

Hello all. I am at my dealer looking at and trying to not be tempted to ride a new GSAW…..

He has 2 on the floor and I am looking them over when I notice that there is a difference on the two…. just below the LED headlight….

One looks like this:

and the other like this:

So what is with the "gray plastic vented looking guard thingie"??

my dealer gave me the "huh" look and said he didn't know.

Can the collective educate me here? Thanks as always…

One is an LED headlight, and one isn't.

Hence my confusion..... I doubt BMW would just add something for the hell of it.... Or maybe the shop or the factory forgot something...... Beats me!

Olive bike has day-time running lights, blue does not.

According to the microfiche, daytime running light trim cover is the difference...

I'm guessing plastic trim vent piece fell or broke off the one bike. Both are LED and they both have DRL integrated into the main lamp and not below it like the halogen light on the GS does.

As I understand it, under the LED lights is the control module and there is a fan that directs warm air from it to the interior of the light housing to warm it and get rid of condensation. The LED lights do not get hot enough to keep the inside works dry when needed. There is no room for the optional day riding light that can be installed under the normal Halogen lamp set up when you have the LED lights.

The blue one is the 2015 model, and the green one is the 2014 model.
