I've only had mine since April, 3500k, but had 0.0 problems with my '14 1190 Standard. Best bike I've owned.

Bike screams and zero dust/dirt issues since installing the uni.
Oldfuddy, you looking to do this ?

So lets say I break open the air box (to put in my Uni Filter) and DO find dirt and grime. What is the best way to clean her out? Some kind of throttle intake cleaner? This is going with the trend that KTM will most likely give resistance in doing the right thing themselves..

KTM are to busy shifting production to China with their latest models as well as setting up Chinese manufacturers and suppliers for their bikes to worry about issues with the 1190 and 1290.

So you'll get the run around from Austria, be sent back to the importer and it will end with 'please take the bike in to your nearest dealer....'....issues dead.

Don't waste your time...ride it or sell it and never buy another KTM again.

I'm NOT looking for OPINIONS FROM THOSE WITHOUT THIS ISSUE. My question is for those with this issue who have their bikes at a KTM dealer.

How is your dealer:

1) evaluating damage to the engine and
2) what are they doing to remedy?

Mine is still 'working with KTM' on the issue as of yesterday I have refused to pay for the valve adjustment from the dirt my motor has digested thanks to the defective bike as delivered.

I have posed this question to my dealer and will report back.

As far I see it the OUTCOMES are:
1) No significant engine damage (compression+dyno?) replace the defective KTM OEM filter with a quality aftermarket (Uni).
2) The valve train is so dirty that it is shot. KTM replaces the head.
3) The piston and cylinder wall are smeared and KTM replaces the motor as doing the entire top end wouldn't make economic sense.

I really wish I was out riding this weekend.

Tim

I hope your outcome will be covered under warranty. KTM's insipid airbox/airfiltration design is an unavoidable blemish on a bike that's almost a work of art. I can't stress enough that new 1190 R owners pop for the UNI-Filter kit and get it installed before the bike accumulates more than 100k. This airbox/airfilter issue on this model is a f****** debacle.

Oh CRAP! Forgot to mention how my dealer is handling the airbox/airfilter issue. My dealer in Phoenix AZ strongly recommended that I install the UNI-Filter kit if I ride the bike in heavy dust or silt conditions. (Well, no shit! DUH!) In addition, my dealer would honor warranty issues if I replaced the stock air filter w\ the UNI-Filter kit. Do check with your dealer that you bought the bike and see if they will honor warranty issues after installing the UNI-Filter kit. I'm curious to know how the dealer's are handling the warranty issue on the airbox/airfilter problem.

I received the following response:

Dear Loyal KTM customer,

The 1190 Adventure series of bikes are specifically engineered to identify and torture BMW GS riders that have infiltrated the KTM ranks. The unique quirks of the bikes that can be resolved in 25 minutes by your average teenager with a screw driver will prove too much thus sending them sprinting to their closest BMW dealer.

Please feel free to write again as you can imagine I have nothing better to do then read emails from forum experts

Regards,
Stevey

More than a grain of truth in that.
