The John Penton Story screening Chandler AZ June 23



Join us for a screening of the Kickstarter project movie: The John Penton Story. Screening will be at Chandler Mall Harkins Cinemas (in Chandler near the 101/202 intersection) June 23 and starts at 7:30.

Got an email blast that they are trying to get enough signed up for a showing up in Prescott on that same day. Really interesting subject matter.

John Penton and Malcolm Smith are my motorcycle heros.

In 1973 I bought my first new motorcycle - a Penton 125 International Six Days Trials. I installed a headlight, taillight, and a bicycle squeeze-bulb horn, and a license plate. I rode it to school during the week and on trails on the weekends. The term 'dualsport' had not been coined yet. The general dimensions of the bikes have not changed much in 40 years - they still have a 21" front, 18" rear, and weigh about 235lbs. The more things change the more they stay the same!

Penton motorcyles were built in the KTM factory in Austria. In 1978 John Penton sold the rights to his brand back to KTM, that was the first year the bikes came to the US with the name KTM on the tank. In previous years many of the Pentons had KTM motors. I've owned a bunch of them over the years, with KTM and Sachs motors in them.

In 2011 I bought a Husqvarna TE630 from Malcom Smith, it carries his autograph.

About 10 years ago I restored a bike just like the one I rode on as a kid.

You need to get together with Robert "Skip" Page here in Tucson (rpage11). He has 6 or 7 restored Penton/KTM's including one that was used for this movie. He also grew up down the block from John Penton in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. Skip's bikes are so good that Lyle Lovett bought one.

Although, yours look damn good too.

Have heard both names, have met niether.
Was quite active at one time on Vinduro, an early yahoo group for vinage enduro motorcycles. Kind of before there were 'forums'. LOL. I think I made the first run of t-shirts for them. Probly collector items now.

I've sold all my old bikes, just have modern ones now.

I do still like to ride though. Wifey and I did 350 miles up the coast and back yesterday on the XC, had a ball. We were both sore and tired though.
