Creating the ultimate KTM 1190 R Adventure

Dear All;
I wanted to share this with you as I think it would be useful for you and me. I am doing a charity ride starting March 2015. This would be my third ride. This one is going to be the biggest ride I attempt. IT is around the world horizontally and vertically. Dubai, U.A.E to Dubai, U.A.E and Alaska to Argentina. The complete ride cost is covered by my self and all money coming in will go towards building a cancer hospital for children in areas that have no access to medical faculties.

this is the route map and I will be posting the modifications as I go.

Looks like a very challenging and ambitious journey, some parts dangerous. What sort of back up will you have? Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman had film crew and backup vans carrying spares etc. Will you have your own film crew? What is the longest m/c journey you've done before now?

You've bought a Unifilter which will resolve the airbox issues. Are you aware of the other current unresolved issues - e.g with fuel pump, overheating, starting etc, that will have to be sorted out before taking this 'bike on a world tour?

Do you intend to contact the KTM factory in Austria for sponsorship and PR, and also to ask them to ensure your 'bike is 100% reliable before you start out? How many miles will you put on the clock to prove the 'bike in before you start on the world trip?

I'm kinda hoping that you could be the ambassador and catalyst that causes KTM to focus on resolving the reliability issues of the 1190 before you undertake your world tour. Many people suspect that KTM pulled out of the deal with McGregor and Boorman because KTM were concerned about adverse publicity when their 'bikes broke down. Maybe through your efforts, KTM will make good?

if i can add , i will say this about your aussie trail.

go north near adelaide up to the flinders ranges then to ayers rock and from there over to perth thru the great central road, a much more rewarding ride.

good travels eitherway!

ive had my bike for about three days done 1800 ks , i rekon the only thing it needs is a bash plate touratech , spotlights , scottoiler a good nav gadget and maybe heated grips.

Living the dream you are!!

WOW, impressive! Good luck to you!

Just one question (for now, obiously!): how will you ride your bike through China? Did you get some sort of 'special permit'?

Looks like a lot of stuff, and will no doubt make it more versatile.

I'd be interested in the before and after weight of the bike.

I'd like to get weight out of mine.

Truly this is a trip of Epic proprtions, youre a man with an Adventure in your heart and soul, and what a bike to do it on.

As mentioned earlier you could let KTM Austria know about your trip, or post it on the blog pages.
Keep us posted and give us photos, I wish you all the best from Australia and its inmates...

well I don't have the amount of money nor I am famous so there will be 0 backup and it is a solo ride.
I have done a trip previously on a gs1200 and to be honest was very disappointed. The went from Dubai through- Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan , Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore
I will be filming my self

I have been reading about these problems and to be honest I am still testing the bike. I made a list of all the issues and will be making sure to get KTM Austria to know about it.

KTM Has actually sponsored by giving a massive discount so I can supply them with a feedback about the bike and the problems. So I am hoping I will be the voice of the people who have 1190 to make sure the issues are resolved.
