Mid-range KTM Adventure bike at EICMA in Nov 2014?

Had a snippet a month or so back about a new Adventure-styled bike from KTM above the 690 and below the 1190. The source is someone in the industry who should know, but I've not had a second source yet.

EICMA is November, so any new bike would likely not be around until early 2015.

I've been quite happy using a 690 Enduro R for off-tarmac touring so personally I'd be more interested in a 690 Adventure version than a bigger/heavier bike but KTM seems determined not to go that route.

Man I wish KTM would just make a version of Lyndon Poskitt's recent Races to Places build (picture link borrowed from his blog):


I think Lyndon used a 640 motor with vacuum pump and carb to keep the bike simple. This bike would be so easy for KTM to build, but they just don't think the market is there for the bike. I think a consumer version of that bike would sell so well.

V-twin which I guess means it's using the 990cc engine. But supposedly lighter than previous 990 Adventure.

I wonder if this will be a 990 Super Enduro model?

I think you'll see more and more of this. The Dreadnaught-Class ADV bike market is saturated and there's a lot more market share laying on the floor for the manufacturers to sweep up.

I hope they do. Soon you won't be able to swing a dead cat around the room without hitting dudes in Klim uniforms and travel stickers on their bags they bought in the vendors section.

You've only seen the beginnings of the "ADV" thing. The manufacturers have been looking for something other than the "Crotch Rocket/Cruiser/Touring/Off Road" segment to milk for years.

Here we are, boys and girls.

In south africa some manufacturesr have been selling the previous model cars alongside the latest models of the same car. All brand new but the older models are sold for a lower price with a few small upgrades here and there.

If KTM could bring out the old 950 again, with EFI maybe and abs it would surely sell very well alongside the 1190?

The writing has been on the wall on this. KTM bumped the 990 for the 1190 leaving a BIG HOLE in their line up (by design).
I foresee, in my orange crystal ball, an adv and an R model in a 790 v-twin in the 350lb range with 80-90hp.

P.S. Don't wake me up now...

I was talking to my local dealer about when KTM would have a middleweight bike that I could get for my wife and he said he had heard rumors of it happening. He wouldn't verify anything and left me with a wink and a nudge....

If they are going to do anything they are going to do something that competes against the BMW and Triumph 800 class. Or they could focus on a 500c bike for the India market.....even HD is building bikes just for that market.

Just an assumption though....

A few things I've heard.

The 990 was dropped because it was too expensive to build. Won't be back.

KTM has announced a new series of parallel twins (not a fan) to be built in India, 500 and 750. Can these be the new engine source for a mid size adventure?

This would open the door for a new competitor to move in and take over the ready to race mentality applied to bikes for the real world. Not sure how a V-twin is more expensive to build than any other configuration but I don't buy my bikes based on a slight cost difference anyway.

I am pretty sure the midrange adv bike was confirmed by KTM, but no specifics.

The 500 and 750 "india" motors are for India market bikes, which was also confirmed in the same article.

My guess is that they'll do a 790 or 800 p-twin, based somewhere near the husqy terra motor, to compete with the tiger 800 and F800. If they use a 790 v-twin and it weighs close to 425-450 lbs wet and is on par with Tiger 800 / F800 comfort/touring ability, and has the usual KTM dirt-worthiness, I'll be buying one for sure. :)
