Mid sized adv food for thought...

My guess is they'll throw a Nuda motor into a modified 690 frame as a prototype and parade it around the bike show circuit trolling for interest. And if the reception is positive they'll get busy going into production...

I would imagine they meant the whole bike, not just the motor. The 1190 and 1290 is very much the same thing.

Seems to me most of this was discussed in the thread that was predicting the parallel twin concept.

Again, I'd prefer something that competes with the 800 market, but as light and dirt worthy as possible. I think the BMW and Tiger are still too big for most mortals to handle well in the dirt.

It sure would be nice for them to make it comfortable, have real wind protection without the stupid buffeting, a kick stand that isn't mounted to the engine case, fuel capacity/range that doesn't require aftermarket tanks, and the list goes on and on.

Parallel twins are fine. Engine config is perhaps the least important factor in this fantasy.

I will say that the sound and narrowness of the V twin contributes greatly to the enjoyment and performance of the 990 in my opinion. Not to mention that awesome sound.

if the ktm 990 cost too much to build, how in the hell are they building a 1190 and 1290 to build cheaper? they are spending out the waazooo to fix this new motor and etc when the 990 has been refined and is proven which to me seems cheaper.

its like the M2 Browing 50 Cal. Machine gun. its well over 100 years old, same design and its still kicking ass and taking names. much like the 990 lc8 platform. if it isnt broke dont fix it. im all for a new revised 990 engine. maybe make some changes to the motor and cosmetics, drop some weight and etc. theres no need for a bike under the 990 when you have a 690. this is my 2 cents on it.

As for new mud size adventure, I'm pretty sure that in 3-4 years we'll see some adventures with the 800cc Indian motor and dune 690 style plastics...

Do the math on a new 690 enduro $13k+ (in Aust). Add a Basel/700rr tank/fairing kit for $5-7k. Your at $AU20k without any suspension work or racks, tyres, steering damper.
Sure they're nice but its still an enduro with added range - no offence intended

I don't care where it comes from but I really hope someone understands that bigger is not always better

2 tanks vs 1 tank for example. The 1190 is much more "traditional" bike when it comes to layout and solutions, which, maybe, makes it more easily to mass produce.
The 950-990 series were civil versions of a rally machine. Charming, but maybe not the most mass-oriented approaches.
Just a guess.

The 690 is the red headed step child, it just doesn't fit in. It's not a good adv bike and not a good dirt bike.

Both the Lc4 and Lc8 platforms are antiquated with the Lc8 just too big & heavy for a middle weight IMO. KTM can do better and lighter with modern technology. It may take a couple of years to work out the bugs but that's part of the process.

We need more intel

450 rally bike then? what about taking a 500exc and putting the rally get up or making the 500 a rally? seems more capable than a 690 and seems to be preferred from what I hear. I know a couple of guys that ride the 690R and love it. really haven't heard any bad about it but on here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the 690 is a bad bike, it just doesn't fill the void that adv riders are looking for that a 790/890 in adv and R models would/will. Remember, it comes down to sales in the big picture.

All the "what KTM should build" is probably a mute point now anyways because what ever this mid level model is, is probably well in the works by now.
