2014 DV nOOb Rally and beyond...

Yeah, yeah ... This RR is nearly 2 months after the fact

I've been trying to compose a snappy introduction with thoughts about planning, motivations, history, etc.

... but work is kicking my butt and it is just not gonna happen any time soon

If I don't just put this out there now, I probably never will (like last year)

So here it is ...

If you don't know what the DV Noob Rally is, see here > http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=930383

If you've never been, then set aside the last weekend of March 2015 and keep an eye open for the sign-up thread

For the last couple years, I have used the annual DV Noob Rally as an excuse to take time for a longer adventure.
This year I started with the rally, then continued on solo for a few days along the California/Nevada border.
The first days of this report are over in the main event thread (along with a bunch of good stuff from other folks).

For now, just gonna post links to those installments rather than copy the same stuff over again here.
I'll follow with a more detailed writeup (maybe few words, but lotsa pics) of the post rally adventure.

Anyhow, on with the show ...

DAY 4: Flying solo

Sunday morning would be my last at PSR on this trip. From here I planned to head north a bit to explore some new-to-me routes.
Figured I could make it to Benton Hot Springs today, which would be a convenient place to stay a night or two.
After breakfast, I tossed all my comfort stuff into SpeedyGee's truck to be dropped off at home. (Thanks again buddy )
Everything else I had would be going with me on the bike one way or another. Packing took a bit of time and I didn't hit the road until after 9:30am.

All packed up and ready to roll

First part of today would be the same as yesterday.

Having some fun on Hwy190

Quick stop to check the view at Father Crowley point.

Obligatory DVNP pic

With no cats to herd, it was a fast pace over Hunter Mtn.

Leaving the high country one more time.

Hustling across Hidden Valley.

Turned right at Teakettle Junction.

~20 miles of washboard out to Ubehebe Crater.

Over the top and a gradual descent into DV.

Stopped briefly for a drink and to adjust layers (getting warm).

Counted six people at the bottom. A dozen more climbing up or down.

DAY 4: (Continued...)

Couple miles of pavement and I was back in the dirt heading north on Death Valley Road

More fast washboardy. I was just happy there was little to no wind.

Saw two big bikes heading south just before I turned east at Oriental Wash.

Much more to my liking

9k foot Magruder Mtn in the distance.

The road down in the wash proper hadn't seen much travel since the last rains.

Made a short detour to go check out Stateline Cabin. Never been there before.

A little rougher than I expected, but not too bad.

Lots of other structures in the area, including some rudimentary ones.

Back on the move, looking across the valley at Gold Mtn (8150') ...

... and continuing up Oriental Wash.

I passed thru this same area last year on my way to the Noob Rally. Made it a point on that trip to visit the Hard Luck Castle, a local landmark.
Had thought about stopping by again this year, but heard that Randy still doesn't have the pipe organs working. Maybe next year.

Instead I went in search of a nearby geologic landmark ... the Nevada Sphinx.

Pretty cool I guess, though you wouldn't even notice it if rolling by in the wrong direction.

Some really nice country on the way NW towards Gold Point

Rode into town and stopped at the saloon, but there was nobody home 'cept the ghosts

Went and said "hi" to resident-caretakers Herb and Sandy, who were just relaxing on this quiet sunday.

They gave me the OK to hang out Sallys Bordello so I could charge batteries while taking a lunch break

Second part of the day. So far, so good

DAY 4: (Continued...)

Though I had a rough plan of where I was going, I wasn't really sure how far I would get or where I would end up today. Gold Point typically has fuel available and it seemed like good idea to get a couple more gallons while I was here. Walt (another resident-caretaker) is the guy who minds the tanks and I found him kicking around with his buddy Digger (another colorful desert dwelling character). I'm sure I could have wasted a couple hours listening to these guy's stories, but after gassing up it was time to get moving.

A long stright shot scross the valley towards Magruder Mtn.

Looking back towards Gold Point from the other side.

Over a little pass and down to barely-there Lida on Hwy266.

Historic marker and north (snowy) side of Magruder Mtn.

Gaining more altitude up into the Palmetto Mountains.

Highest point (~7400') along this route. The little pass into Lida is just above my seat.

From here it is a long gradual descent down Lida Wash towards Silver Peak.

The road was in perfect shape and I could just cruise along and enjoy the scenery

This is a super nice ride - fast, fun, and flowing

Out of the mountains, looking back up Lida Wash.

Big empty valley ahead, Silver Peak is somewhere on the other side.

There are some dunes out here that might require future exploring.

Approaching Silver Peak and signs of years of earth moving.

At the signpost up ahead ...

I rode up through town and back just to see what was here ... not much

Abandoned businesses.

Buggy graveyards.

Found out later that this is the local watering hole. Wish I had stopped for a

Good report and pics, thanks for posting. I know what you mean by the wind, last time I was camping off the bike out there it came up in the middle of the night, HOLY SHIT.
