Iowa to Arkansas

I'm planning on taking my first weekend motorcycling trip to the Ozarks this weekend, specifically Ozark National Forest and White Rock Mountain area. I plan on leaving Des Moines around 3 (hopefully) Friday after work and camping near Harry S Truman Lake in Missouri on the way down (about 5 hours ride), but that's it so far. Any suggestions on must-sees or don't-do-this's while I'm down there? Or does anyone want to meet up and show me some great roads for a day?

You need to hook up with JD, he's from your neck of the woods and he may know you!

You will LOVE our backyard here! really!

JD did a ride up to, I think, the western part of Iowa and back on his WR250R. So he may still have tracks or recommendations.

One recommendation that I have. You can aim for MO125 when you get to the southern half of Missouri so you can take the Peel ferry across Bull Shoals Lake. Then head south.

A question that may help others. What are you riding for this trip? I think you should try getting some dual sport tires on the GL500 and see how that goes. The CX or the GL are surprisingly light bikes.

Oops, forgot to mention that. I actually sold the GL this past week (made money on it too!). I will be taking a 13 VStrom

Thanks! That's exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. Any experience at the Wagon Wheel Resort and Cafe? That will probably be right around lunchtime, and looks like as good a place as any to stop for a bite.

In Missouri the "letter" roads are fun if you don't mind rough pavement at times. They tend to have light traffic, but are not all maintained that great. As you get into the Ozarks they tend to be very twisty.

I don't know what route you plan on taking out of Iowa, but MO Hwys 129 and 149 both have some good twisty bits west of Kirksville.

I will probably just take 65 down most of the way. I'll be leaving after work so I want to get a decent distance before dark.

Wondering how far you made it down? I am in southeast Iowa. How do you like your V? I have a DL650 with k60 scout heidenau tires. It made last years trip from Iowa to Utah starting out on Thursday and back on Tuesday. I would like to take my wife on a trip in Missouri maybe to Arkansas time permitting, would love to hear about your trip.

You may want to talk to the author of this thread:

http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=994105

He (Karson) is from Iowa and has made NW Arkansas a top riding pick.

NW Arkansas has the best riding in the REGION for both on and off road.
