mate of mine in glen rose , texas just traded off his 990SD & RC8 Akrapovic limited editions for the new 2014 KTM Superduke 1290. Quote from Doug - 189 hp and 400 pounds really is fun, I am grinning.

& if going by all his bikes this thing is going to be modded to the max very soon for track use.

I felt the 1290 engine to be a little smoother than the 1190. Not quite as chuggy at low rpm's. And the way it looks. My god I love the look of this thing in black. When I got home I immediately advertised the 1190 but after 1 week I decided to take down the ad and keep the 1190. The thousands of dollars it was going to cost me was one factor but it was more that I bought the 1190 to get away from the sports bike sort of riding. Be more adventurous, see more places, do longer trips and get back out on the dirt as I had given up dirt bikes when I got into road bikes a few years back and was missing the off road stuff. I think I made the right choice and I think in a few years time I can see a 1290 sitting in my garage as a second bike.
that is exactly my attitude so why is KTM making these dam sexy bikes to tempt me back to riding like a hooligan. God that torque is addicting.

I'm picking up a black 1290 tomorrow, but did a little searching online and this forum for the "1190 or 1290" posts. Wanted to make sure I had no regret....and because the mid-10 second 1/4 mile times of the 1190 had me thinking "wow, brutally fast for my mainly-pavement riding and it can carry a passenger and a few items much easier."

But taking stock of where I ride and my needs still leans heavily toward the 1290 even though the fire-breathing 1190 with its wind protection and better passenger capabilities sure is tempting. And, no, I won't be buying N+1...

Both are great bikes, so pick the one that suits YOUR riding style better.

I had an adventure bike, sold it for a Ducati Monster. Owned that for one year, and traded it in for a new adventure bike. Waste of money on the monster. NOT a waste of money on the 1190

Man, I had the 1190 broken in for all of 20 minutes before I landed a $350 speeding ticket (and he cut me a major break! ). The SD would cost me my license in no time. Gotta save that speed for the gravel!
